EPIX channels are on free preview now. Dish site says 10/5-10/7 so they started a day early.

I got the letter today. I am out of contract, with Absolute and 3 premiums. Still considering what to do but I will probably drop some or all of the premiums, and possibly go with Netflix for movies. Will dropping premiums put me back onto a contract?

That fixed it. I had not changed it, but flipping it to Dual and back to Single mode fixed the problem. Thanks!

I don't think it's the TV. Guide and DVR displays take up the entire screen (vertical and horizontal). But black bars top and bottom appear when I go back to the program. How can the TV aspect ratio be wrong if the black bars are only displayed sometimes?

If you have a 16x9 TV LCD on TV2 it will display a downconverted 16x9 HD signal over RCA or Coax in the proper 16x9 aspect ratio, no zooming required. Of course it's not HD, but no stretch-o-vision or crops unless the original HD source is stretched or cropped.

Press the * key on your remote to cycle through the zoom/aspect ratio settings.

That's a great strategy. If VS/Golf counts as 2 HD channels, then 15 VOOMs on 3 should still count as 15 HD channels with a ton of bandwidth saved. While we're at it, split MonstersHD into a separate channel per distinct movie and you'd get, what, 10 more HD channels for no additional...

When I upgraded my 942 to 622, the instructions said only to return the receiver, so that's all I returned and I got my rebate. I kept the remotes, manual, cables and whatever else may have arrived with the original receiver.

I heard it here too, watching my local HD feed from Dish. It occurred mostly during commercials (which, sadly, is my main reason for watching!). During the most severe dropouts, the display on my audio receiver indicated rapid switching in and out of dolby digital.
