    Price Increase!

With this rate of price increases, I think TV might face the same future as CDs (that is, popularity of P2P)... Hong.

Directv Going To Lease Only On 3/1/06

Well, the point in my example was that it's like paying full price for the Lexus upfront to lease. BTW, my HR10-250 is two years old. I am sure I can get more than $250 on eBay (just checked). So the difference is after I am done with DirecTV (with the price increase, it begs me to :p), I...

Directv Going To Lease Only On 3/1/06

So, say I "lease" a new HD DVR with an upfront fee of $299 (after $100 MIR). After the commitment period, I decided to go with cable. Does DirecTV take the HD DVR or do I get to keep it? From the wording of "lease", I get the feeling that I need to return the HD DVR. If so, that's a HUGE...

    DirecTV's Junk DVR's

jdk, it would be interesting to list what you liked about UTV compared to, say, TiVo and then we can discuss about if other competitors could do the same or no. Also, it would be interesting to discuss why only TiVo survived out of three. Hong.

DirecTV to offer free HD receiver upgrade

The main problem with HMC as known currently is the lack of HD clients in the foreseeable future. They should have just implemented TiVo's HMO... Hong.

DirecTV to offer free HD receiver upgrade

There is no MPEG-4 HD DirecTiVo planned. Also, seeing that the Spaceway 2 is again delayed, I think your $1000 investment can be saved from the drain for a bit longer. :) Hong.

    USAToday article: DirecTv vs TiVo

I think BillyT was talking about R15, the new non-TiVo SD DirecTV DVR. Its top FF speed is twice of that of TiVo. But due to the patent that TiVo holds, it won't go back. Also, it is believed that R15 will not have 30-second skip. Hong.

    USAToday article: DirecTv vs TiVo

    > Will it be able to record in HD? The one mentioned in the USAToday article is only for SD (no HD, no MPEG-4 AVC). However, DirecTV will eventually have one. Eventually. :p Hong.

We just received our 1st r15 dvr

------ The fact that you can not watch something that has already been recorded while its recording 2 programs is horrible. ------ Actually, if I understand it correctly, I thought the problem was that you cannot watch the currently recording shows. That is, if the 1-hour show is currently...

    Dumped DirecTV for Dish

But he can come back for $299 HR10-250 (and another $100 rebate). :p Hong.

DirecTV plans to stop marketing TIVO

------ I hope D* new MPEG4 HDDVR will have features that are comparable and work as well as well as my current HDTivo, if not they better add a lot more HD content fast. I don't think i'd be the only one thinking about switching to E* ------ I hope so too. But even if it doesn't, I guess I...

DirecTV plans to stop marketing TIVO

------ However, I just don't see how Tivo could patent their dvr. It's essentially a time shifting device just like the VCR. ------ I think their patent is for a specific implementation, in this case, digital time-shifting. I don't care much for patents in general, but the law is such and...

DirecTV plans to stop marketing TIVO

------ Tivo hasn't patented the function of the Tivo. ------ TiVo will say otherwise as they are on their first legal battle with Echostar. :) I think I can still look up their patent portfolio related to DVRs if you'd like. Hong.

TV Guide Channel SHOULD be Moved to Ch. 235

I guess Tele-TV does not have a DirecTiVo... Otherwise, you wouldn't care much about the order of the channels (not that I would watch TV Guide or E! for that matter). Hong.

Current on D* (I have almost had it)

Although I did not watch CRNT for an extended time, I thought the format (a string of short segments) wasn't too bad as long as they update the contents frequently enough. Also, I felt that it was somewhat like a high-production-value high school TV channel, or something like that... :p Hong.

    spaceway 2?

I think DirecTV is in "no hurry". I could be wrong, but their "future HD plan" seems to require both Spaceway 1 and Spaceway 2. So, unless Spaceway 2 is up, they may not work towards the transition to MPEG-4 AVC... But, that's just my guess. Hong.

    spaceway 2?

    > Delayed because it's broke????? No, it's delayed because the other half is broken. AFAIK, the Spaceway 2 was designed with another payload to be launched together. The initial problem was that the other payload had technical problems. Unless that is fixed, the all-fine Spaceway 2 cannot...

    ESPN2-HD Launch Rumor

------ another HD lite just what we need. TNT HD would be better. ------ And TNT-HD won't be "HD-Lite", how? :p EDIT: BTW, "HD-Lite" usually refers to reduced resolution (usually for 1080i), not reduction in bitrate. ESPN/ESPN2 HD are in 720p whose resolution won't change. If you...

New DIRECTV H20 MPEG-2/4 on sale

Robert @ VE is just offering what he knows as "a fact" when he offers it. He sometimes is over-enthusiastic, but that does not mean he intentionally lied or misled us. It just means that we, the reader should take the most of the news regarding future schedules from anybody with some grains...

    R15 DVR on sale

Not in the manual. We may have to wait if a "code" will be there, but since this is made by DirecTV/NDS, I doubt it. Hong.

    R15 DVR on sale

    1) Who knows? No company wants to release a product with bugs, but the reality (which a lot of us have been involved with) is that for companies, the release date is more important than having zero "known" bugs. So, they will release products knowing that they have some unresolved known bugs...

Rumor - Free Hd Equipment From Direct?

There is no need for DirecTV to add MPEG-4 HD LIL for NY and LA (because they already have MPEG-2 feeds). Well, at least for now. Hong.

    DVR Fastforward through commercials?

FF1 (one arrow) will NOT compensate for the over-shooting. FF2 and FF3 will try to compensate for the over-shooting and start playing from some time back. I use FF2 and FF3 mostly. There is a code for 30-second skip (I forgot the sequence) that will enable the hidden/unsupported feature...
