    Phone Power service outage

Well, well. Denial-of-service attack. Just what I suspected. Fortunately, it's possible to implement some detection and remedial mechanisms in most high-end network systems, so I trust that PhonePower IT staff are now adequately educated (or rapidly becoming) on this. Pretty sick world we live...

    Phone Power service outage

If you find a provider you consider better, let us know. I've had 7 or 8 so far, and this glitch by itself isn't enough to get me to move back to any of those. Frankly, I think it would be hard to do much better - no internet-based business is immune to system failures or hacker attacks. And...

All's well now - in and out are fine. Heckuva day for the PP IT folks.

    Phone Power service outage

I agree they've been reliable, and tech and sales support have been very good (better than what I experienced with Lingo/PrimusTel). If I had to guess, I'd say that instead of being a trend, this incident might result in them being even more reliable (they may go for redundancy in equipment, and...

    Phone Power service outage

Wow, didn't figure I'd be on satelliteguys discussing a voip outage, but I'm in the same boat as everyone else, here. This has all the markings of a denial-of-service attack against them. If that's the case, then they might be in a heap o' trouble, because if you don't have the kind of...

Do you guys think DISH will release a IRD with active Firewire?

What a skeptic. Sure it will. And as soon as somebody makes either a blu-ray recorder or D-VHS VCR with a USB 2.0 port, we'll be all set. I heard Sony is planning that right after the Hades hockey team wins the Stanley Cup. x

Do you guys think DISH will release a IRD with active Firewire?

Sorry to see this a bit late ... did you call Comcast to see if they had the channels you want? When I switched to Comcast from Dish over a year ago, it was only because they finally did offer my channel (TV5) in our area. But there was nothing specific on their web site about it, and I only...

30 Days for new Install, is that normal?

Not to imply anything, but why would your competition be booked for the next 3 months, while you can do an install today? Just kidding; nothing you've said suggests you're not every bit as desirable as the competition. It's just that the way you worded it came out funny. x

    Sometimes I wonder - A Scott Comentary

It's nice to hear someone confirm what I can see with my eyes. When you do see a 22Mbps MPEG-2 stream, though, it can look pretty nice. It's disappointing to see stuff like Seinfeld reruns being pushed out there on an "HD" broadcast, but it seems that there just isn't that much true original HD...

    Sometimes I wonder - A Scott Comentary

I wonder what info you based that comment on. I switched to Comcast 5 months ago for HD. I get 6 HD channels for $5/mo (three locals, HBO, SHO, and ESPN). That's a helluva a deal, and I even matched all the rest of the E* programming I had before for a similar package price (lower total...

HDTV Antenna - Anybody use radio shack (see link)

Well, with a cable run of >30' (altitude plus some horizontal), especially if it's RG59, it's reasonable that a preamp could help, depending on the receiver's front end gain section. It's just that it's worth trying without one, first. And if you've got one an it's doing a good job, adding more...

FLASH: Dish 811 now $199 for Existing Customers!

Re: Couldn't get $149 deal.... CSR roulette. Unbelievable. Not unique to E*, but still unbelievable the level of churn. Given that we know they're reading this forum, you'd think fixing the CSR inconsistent stories would be a priority, but I guess not. That would seem to blow my $1K total...

FLASH: Dish 811 now $199 for Existing Customers!

Thanks, that at least doesn't refute my hypothesis that you're "exclusive" if you spent over $1K. What I'd like to hear is if anyone who spent *less* than $1K got the $149 offer. That would shoot down my theory. x

FLASH: Dish 811 now $199 for Existing Customers!

Re: Called Dish for 811 Deal A commitment to what? I offered locals + an int'l a la carte + HD Pak. That would cost more than AT50. They said no. Thanks, x

FLASH: Dish 811 now $199 for Existing Customers!

Unless I'm mistaken, you don't need HD Pack to get HBO-HD and SHO-HD. You just need a HD receiver and a subscription that includes the movie channels. x

FLASH: Dish 811 now $199 for Existing Customers!

Somehow I don't think that would be the case (unless you're joking). A lot of people who want the 811 don't have any HD receiver, so the HD Pak would be a pretty boring subscription for them. x

FLASH: Dish 811 now $199 for Existing Customers!

Thanks, that's very good info. I'm particularly curious about the installation requirement, because I bought my original equipment at Sears and self-installed. In such a case, I wonder who would do your 811 install? Maybe you have to pick someone? On a related topic, it occurred to me that...

FLASH: Dish 811 now $199 for Existing Customers!

You don't but I wonder if it has anything to do with the "random exclusive customer" deal? The first question the CSR asked me was "do you have an HDTV" and I said I was getting one for Xmas. She offered me the $199 deal with CC autopay (already have) and a 1-year AT50. No chance of $149. Maybe...

HDTV Antenna - Anybody use radio shack (see link)

The Winegard antenna may improve things, but a higher gain preamp might not, and could actually make it worse. The preamp is mainly necessary to compensate for signal loss in a long cable run (or if you're using RG59 instead of RG6 or RG11, for example). It adds a small amount of noise to the...

What other programming do you have? I called to ask about the deal and was told $199 with a commitment to AT50 or greater. x

Awesome. Thanks for the info! I'll be curious to hear how it's handled if your original dealer was Sears and you self-installed. x

    New 301 Software

They probably have data on which customers buy which programming, and maybe people with more expensive receivers buy more programming and are more likely to get superdishes, HD, and other expensive stuff that the new software enables. I've got a 2800 and a 301, and I buy almost nothing...

    921 firewire

Indeed, that is a serious concern. With my 2Mbps cable modem setup, I can download a full 2hr HD movie (approx 25GB) in less than 35 hours. I plan to be doing a lot of this. And if I want more, I'm sure that my employer will be happy to let me and all my coworkers do our downloading on the...

Can we remove the 8vsb from the 811?

It would be nice, but I'm not optimistic. The HW needed to do HD tends to run pretty hot. But the fan on a larger box can be much quieter, since it can be larger and run more slowly than the tiny fan in a plug-in module. x
