    DVR Viewing throughout entire home?

There's a HUGE benefit to this though. If one receiver/HDD dies, you still have copies of your DVR'd events. I actually have that setup, and consider it a benefit.

    Dish vs. DirecTV

I don't live in the city either. He did not specify WHERE he lived. Just adding some substance to this thread, which is more than I can say for some...;)

    Dish vs. DirecTV

I get it. I get it. You prefer D*. I was making sure he got all the info on the receivers. I'm a "glass half full" kind of guy...

    Dish vs. DirecTV

I was simply pointing out that the limitation is NOT necessarily the receiver's limitation. If you can't get OTA, then that's one thing. BTW, antennas can be attic mounted AND you get the best possible picture available, IMO...

    Dish vs. DirecTV

Two VIP722K's would allow you to record up to 8 programs (with the OTA module). No?

Can EHD be used between (2) 622's?

I think he's referring to filling it up rapidly. I suggest you invest in a couple of drive docks (Thermaltake or Rosewill). Then buy a couple of SATA drives (1TB). You can have a drive on each and move those back and forth between receivers w/o having to plug/unplug from the USB port. In...

SlingLoaded HD DVR VIP 922 Availability

I, like everyone else (besides the OP), think you are full of hot air. You make insinuations about why a device is not available that, by the way, hasn't really been announced all that long. Then throw out you want a "HD DVR" because E* is no longer selling them. You then state you will go to...

    TIVO vs E*

I wouldn't speculate on what their software does or how exactly it functions, but from my own experience, MY code can do function differently based on different equipment SOMETIMES. Not sure that's the case here, but just a small bit of info for you.

    TIVO vs E*

I think you are assuming there are a lot of Tivo-fanboys out there. Most people I know think the whole Tivo and it's over-inflated monthly fees for the "right" to record TV without providing much else has been exposed as a scam. Don't get me wrong, I like the "trick play" function, but I watch...

    TIVO vs E*

This is where we differ on what a patent should protect. It appears they did exactly what E* is attempting to do. Find a cheaper/better alternative to an existing product. Anyway, as I said, we won't agree on it, but at least we managed to stay civil about it. I can't say that's been the...

    TIVO vs E*

I mispoke on the input source. For that, I apologize. Shows my arrogance or lack of knowledge (or both) on a Tivo itself. As for the rest of your post, no matter the cost, the technology was already created.

    TIVO vs E*

Your D* receiver is NOT a Tivo...it has Tivo functionality, but is most definitely not a Tivo.

    TIVO vs E*

It IS when I'm trying to point out that just because an end-result is the similar, it does not necessarily mean they ARE the same (ie. a DVD writer compared to a DVR). Look, we're not gonna agree on this, so I give up. I was just trying to show you guys that what Tivo invented already existed...

    TIVO vs E*

So, you don't get my lay terms for what a VIP can do that a Tivo can't, or are you just being "smart"? Look, I'm no electronics expert, but it doesn't take a rocket scientist to look at a Tivo and a VIP side-by-side and realize the Tivo has to have a separate input source to function. The...

    TIVO vs E*

I've not a lot of problem with you are saying. My contention is NOT that the patent exists, but rather should it have EVER been granted. I think we ALL agree this technology existed WAAY before Tivo was granted a patent. Now, it appears our court system will, at some point, let them go after...

    TIVO vs E*

No, but does a Tivo build it's own content like a ViP? In that manner, they differ just like the Tivo differs from a DVD and an MP3 player. That's what I mean. If you wanted to nickle and dime this whole "who invented what" discussion, it could go on forever.

    TIVO vs E*

Comparing a completely non-exist product to one that has existed FOR YEARS before the patent was requested??? WOW...WOW...
  22. klegg

    TIVO vs E*

The point being, they DIDN'T invent that. It already existed. All the processes they used already existed...they just built a stand-alone product that did it.

    TIVO vs E*

Here's the part that gets me, that maybe the non-IT type might not get: Let's say I'm at a customer's location and see an application/system that is pretty cool looking. The customer shows me the various screens, etc and how they work. Now, I go back to another customer of mine and code...

    TIVO vs E*

I guess, as a programmer, my point would be that these terms ARE ambiguous. A judge trying to define what these terms mean is dumb IMO. Even if he's getting his info from "experts". I'm a programmer (although not on the platform being discussed), and when I read some of the "expert opinions"...

    TIVO vs E*

The problem with what you are saying is that logic is WAAAAY too broad. If what you're saying is true, then anyone can just patent an "idea" without having any specifics to patent. Sounds like what the judge is actually allowing Tivo to do, so nothing would surprise me. I stand by my earlier...
