Great writeup Tim! I think that it IS the same design as the wifi antennas. doubleoh, you had pretty good signal before other than noise and much of the noise looked like out of band noise that was overloading the frontend of the radio. Try running with no LNA and plugging the SDR straight...

I was unable to get the noaa demod to work when i tested it once again in HDSDR.

Crank up the volume slider and input signal level should come up. Howd you manage to get that working Tim? :-)

Also for informational purposes, I live close to down east microwave - my original unit was one of theirs apparently and it didn't do so hot but might have been damaged by someone before me. Their gear is really well built for the price. Weatherproof and good and shielded. I got mine...

Thanks for your testing Tim! - you just prooved that the RTL-SDR dongles can be used for this project. R820t needs a downconverter to shift the IF from 1692.7 to something within it's hearing range - I have 2 of these tuners and can confirm BOTH are deaf at the GOES frequencies. Folks with...

Here is the LNA I am using with excellent results: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Ultra-Low-Noise-Amplifier-10-6000-MHz-RF-LNA-40-dB-Gain-0-8-dB-Noise-Figure-/281980480555?hash=item41a758ac2b:g:-CIAAOSwKIpWDJuF

Nice feed there Tim! I am eager to see what a recorded signal from that looks like. Doubleoh, I took a look at your recording and you still have lots of noise spikes in there but plenty of gain. Perhaps try lowering the sample rate of the SDR and recording again with the signal offset some...

UPDATE: Yesterday I did some work with the RTL-SDR dongles and managed to get a dongle with the e4000 tuner working with the demodulator!!!!! I still need to see if I can iron some kinks out but have encountered a minor setback.

Woah! Major difference in the coax there. - keep the old dish for wifi or something

Ah yeah, I see where he lengthened the dipole. I'm sure that helps with gain.

cool beans - It will be interesting to see the result. For right now I am waiting on doubleoh to make some more recordings - the ones he has made so far seem 'off'. like there is something amiss with the SDR settings or the recording settings.

Here is a current picture of my setup running. I do not have a band pass filter installed. I still have the periodic broadband noise issue. Just got my first full disk image off emwin!

Something still doesn't sound right about those recordings. I can hear the bzzzzt noise of the packets but it does not sound right. I'm betting there is something odd going on with your airspy settings. The picture you posted of the wide sample rate with the noise spikes shows a good amount of...

Have you set the skew of your dish? (it should be turned clockwise or counterclockwise so many degrees) This could cost you 3-5 Db of gain if you have not performed this adjustment. http://arachnoid.com/satfinderonline/ Go here to figure out your skew. you will probably have to re-peak after...

All i did to my antenna was spaced out the sub reflector alittle bit more - I do think a V shaped sub reflector would help you. I am looking at your file now. I am unable to get any data from it holdon. I will edit this post momentarily Observations: 0). I was able to use audacity to...

Doubleoh, Can you make me a baseband recording in sdr-console and upload it somewhere and provide me the link. (using Display -> data recordings -> recorder) - This should allow me to possibly do some additional troubleshooting. I would need about 2 minutes worth of recording.

I wouldn't be so fast to write off the airspy or the antenna yet. - it might too be that you aren't peaked properly. Joe Steinmetz (USA-SATCOM Author of the demodulator) is using an airspy in his setup. Perhaps he will post his settings.

My antenna was built for 2.4-2.5 GHz band but it works well for EMWIN. The feed matters more than the Dish in my opinion. (Although with a grid parabolic (non-solid) dish reflector, the size of the holes / grooves DOES matter and play a role.)
