Hands down the Dish 522 beats any cable DVR I've seen. I live in Charter cable area but work for Comcast as a sub-contractor and neither Charter or Comcast has a decent DVR solution compared to Dish. Actually I don't get this either. DN knows via the units serial number whether it is paid for or not. If it is a legit unit I don't understand why they wouldn't activate them. They could still charge their $5/month VOD fee as they do on the lease units.

I think your problem is shutting it down every night. If you still want to shut it down every night I'd enable the updates (Menu - 8 - 5) for like 10 minutes ahead of your current time and let it run and then disable it again after its finished at least every couple of weeks.

No, unfortunately there are no DVRs available that will queue up playback of pre-recorded shows. I don't know why. It seems to me that creating a "playlist" feature wouldn't be that hard to do, but no DVR manufacturer has come up with this for video recordings. Tivo sort of has playlist features...

Heh I give the races about a 30-40 min head start on recording and then use the skip button to get through commercials. Works like a charm. I usually get down to the last few laps of a race before I'm on live tv. :)

Depends on the installer that comes out to do the install. But as Cascade said 99% of them want to get in and out as quickly as possible. Now on the other hand you could offer them a big tip to stay and do the job more complete and thorough. I've done this with cable installers in the past.

The delay could be that they don't have the stock of 811's this promotion would require. I can see how this would be an extremely popular choice for both existing and new customers.

I don't think they go so much on credit rating. I had one CSR tell me that people fail the credit check if they have any out standing judgements or collections on their credit history.
