Intel to launch Core i7 Nov 17th

I'll wait until teh Corei7 launches and then the previous model processors drop in price and I'll get one of those older processors :) Being on the bleeding edge of technology usually just makes you bloody.

    Linux Spanning Drives

you might be able to do this with LVM but I'm not sure if you can simply "blend" a new drive with an existing one that has data on it. It might be something you need to set up at install time.

    Greetings through ubuntu

Van, If you go into the add/remove programs from the Applications menu (usually top, left in a default install) you can search for a program. You won't find winrar as that's a windows program. So you look for rar or unrar. Alternatively you can go into the Synaptic package manager from System...

    Greetings through ubuntu

Van what kind of programs are you looking for? I have Hardy at home. (and a previous version as well). I use Ubuntu exclusively at home so maybe I can help you find something.

Internet Speed Problem - Phone company says it's on my end

For anti-spyware, anti-virus and anti-malware.... I have linux.. heheheh Seriously though, my kids have windows machines and they run spybot and adaware at least once a week. Windows can get "dirty" amazingly fast. They also have a corporate version of Symantec antivirus (courtesy of Dad) with...

Internet Speed Problem - Phone company says it's on my end

When the phone company told me, "It must be your house wiring", I ran a direct line to their interface box outside. When they AGAIN told me, "it must be your house wiring", I responded, "I'm tapped direct to your interface". There was a tech here within 2 hours. Turns out there was a bad cable...

The PC is portmapping the universe...

Kinda funny. I used Redhat a long time ago and then Fedora. It was still kinda geeky back when I used either of those. And recently I installed Fedora again to see if it had changed much... I removed it after about a week of fiddling with it. I use Ubuntu. And honestly.... even though I work...

    What is your primary OS?

I knew Vista Home Premium factored in there somewhere, but I thought it was on the other side of the line.

    What is your primary OS?

This is a legitimate Microsoft question. It is not the least bit "shady" so you can actually call Microsoft and request an XP install CD so that you can downgrade your Vista to XP. I think the media is under $15. One word of caution when attempting this... SOME newer computers (laptops mostly)...

    What is your primary OS?

If you really want XP, you can install it using the license code from Vista. You have "downgrade rights"

    Slingcatcher finally released !

AJF, I currently have 2 cat5 and 2 RG6quad at each TV location. I'm blessed with easy basement access though so I could add a cable or 2 still. This is a small, 1400 square foot ranch. I'm not going to spend a ton on this. I *really* don't want to go back to cable, but with cable I could do this...

The PC is portmapping the universe...

you guys aren't old enough... hehehe.... the first computer I was ever exposed to was built by my older brother and my dad in our basement. It ran on vacuum tubes, was the size of 2 chest freezers and all it did was punch holes in cards. You could reprogram it by swapping tubes around in...

    What is your primary OS?

I dabbled in linux way back when you compiled your own kernel (on a 386-66 that meant starting sometime after lunch and hoping it finished with no errors around dinner time... hehehe). Back then it was interesting but not very practical for most day-to-day work. Where I work we make a LOT of...

    Slingcatcher finally released !

Ok I've been watching this with some interest. See... my wife has asked if we can have whole house video. I've been looking for a rather inexpensive way to do this. Slingbox, while not inexpensive units, appear to be very well thought out, but here's my question: If I have 2 satellite...

    Dell Inspiron Mini 9

One of the main reasons this thing comes without an optical drive is to maintain a zero spindle configuration. Solid state hard drive and no optical drive means greatly enhanced on-battery time. Once you start spinning motors, the battery life goes down dramatically.

Essentials for a new gaming rig

If you have a standard case and it's relatively recent, you should be able to reuse the case. However, mind what I said earlier about airflow. You want to keep that case as cool as possible and big fans are much quieter than little fans. You can get a really nice case for under $100... sometimes...

Essentials for a new gaming rig

LGA 775 is not tricky at all. I install into LGA775 sockets regularly. :) And the push-pin stock Intelcoolers are not too bad, but I boxed mine up and replaced it with a Zalman. Make sure you get a big enough power supply with multiple 12v rails. Preferably modular cabling. Get rid of your old...

If you have it clean and you feel pretty good about it... snapshot that sucker and create a restore point. I, too, use linux and have since about 2004 or 2005.... I MAKE my kids snapshot their windows machines. The rule is, if you get it infected, you fix it yourself or you resore it to factory...

    New router?

Whatever WAN device you end up with, whether it's a DSL modem or ... I don't know what the FIOS interface is... just connect it to a 24 port switch. Now you can have a port for every port on your patch panel (except ONE where the WAN device is plugged into the switch). You can easily add...

The end is near for Windows XP

yeah I kinda screwed that up... we were told IN April .... yes Dell still sells machines with XP Pro. And I think they've got another month to go. Toshiba sells machines with Vista Business installed but also SHIPS the XP media and I believe THAT will continue to be allowed. Dell is also...

The end is near for Windows XP

We are a reseller and we're being told that as of April this year, OEMs won't be allowed to ship machines with XP pre-installed. When you get a machine with Vista Business you have downgrade rights to install XP Pro (we also handle MS licensing for almost all of the state universities in NY)...
