Possible New DirecTV Customer with Questions

I am not worried about the second TV not being able to receive premium/movie channels because my Mom won't be subscribing to them. Regarding the RF remote kit for an HR24, I would assume it comes with a remote. Will the IR remote that comes with the HR24 still work? I had read somewhere that...

Possible New DirecTV Customer with Questions

I'm looking to switch my Mom over from Dish to DirecTV because the DirecTV programming packages fit her needs better. I do have a few questions about receivers. She doesn't need or want a DVR but she has two HD TVs. She doesn't need to watch two different programs on each TV at the same time...

    Sportstime Ohio HD?

You may want to post this in the appropriate DirecTV Forum instead of the Dish Network Forum.

DIRECTV Offers Free HD to Space Station

Actually it would. Even with NASA's constellation of TDRS satellites, they do not have full time video downlink from the Space Station to earth.

DIRECTV Offers Free HD to Space Station

This has to be one of the stupidest publicity stunts. The Space Station is at an orbit about 200 miles and makes one orbit of the earth in about 90 minutes. The Space Station would have the ability to receive a signal at most 60 minutes during every 90 minute orbit using DirecTV's current...

Swanni says Direct WILL have 100 HD channels by years end.

I think it is pretty obvious that the two satellites that Charlie Ergen talked about are the E-11 and the AMC-14 satellites. I do not believe that an authorized slot has been aplied for/determined for E-11 and the 105.5 W tweener slot is the only one that SES Americom has applied for with...

    Some Thoughts About The Future

The original plans for the Spaceway Ka band satellites was for broadband access which for that application can tolerate data dropout with error correction and if needed reduced downlink speeds. Near real time video i.e., television programming can not tolerate the type of data dropout from rain...

    Some Thoughts About The Future

With Ka and regular Ku band, I think you would still need a dish closer to 30". You might get away with something down to 28" but the downlink availability for Ka band with its susceptibility to rain fade makes smaller dishes extremely difficult.

    Some Thoughts About The Future

It is obvious that you don't understand some of the basics associated with what determines the size of a dish that is needed to receive Ka and regular Ku band. Smaller dishes can be used for DBS Ku band primarily because of the minimum of 9 degrees of spacing between DBS orbital slots. Regular...

Whie the Dish folks are Celebrating...

I was refering to a D500 which is a 20" dish and a D300 which is a 18" dish. There are some areas curently that require a Superdish for the SD locals and would require an additional D300 to receive HD nationals or some internationals which is probably what you are seeing in your area. It is...

Whie the Dish folks are Celebrating...

You are forgetting about the spotbeam capacity of Rainbow-1 at 61.5 W. Yes it requires a two dish solution but many folks would prefer two smaller dishes to the one big one that DirecTV requires. Dish will free up additional space on Rainbow-1 for using more of its spotbeams after E-10 is...

    Spaceway 2 Launch thread - It's up!

I have to believe this delay will be a minimum of two weeks and more likely 3 to 4 weeks with the whole launch vehicle going back to the assembly building. If for some reason the launch vehicle would have to be removed from the launch table, the delay could be 2 to 3 months.

5 LNB dish -- rumor or fact?

I thought E*'s Superdish was about 30 inches wide. Funny how DirecTV can spend billions on satellites that require use of dishes that have not been tested for mass TV services. IIRC there were posts several months back that basically guaranteed that rain fade would not be a problem with the...

    A little Voom fall-out speculation

The Rainbow-1 (R-1) satellite has 22 spotbeams with each spotbeam having 4-7 TPs. Five of these spotbeams are for out west and probably would not be used by Dish because of line of sight and rain fade issues. Using the R-1 satellite in spotbeam mode could probably provide HD LILs for the top...

Breaking: DirecTV to Launch 2 HD Satellites

Another factor that needs to be considered is that one would expect that the local stations will be improving their HD signals including increasing the power output as more folks purchase HD TVs/receivers. On a different subject how much do you think DirecTV will charge for HD locals...

Breaking: DirecTV to Launch 2 HD Satellites

So in a situation with rain fade from a Ka band signal, your internet access slows down a bit, no big deal. Even with VOD using a TiVO/DVR, your programming just takes a little longer to download to the harddrive or your storage buffer needs to be large to compensate for possible reduced...

Breaking: DirecTV to Launch 2 HD Satellites

Just out of curisosity, what was the DirecTV's advertised planned use for the Spaceway satellites prior to the annoucement of their use for HD locals? Perhaps internet access or video on demand services? The other factor is the apparent planned use of a single dish for receiving the signal...

Breaking: DirecTV to Launch 2 HD Satellites

Sorry to rain on the DirecTV HD locals parade but realize that the first Spaceway satellite will be a Ka-band satellite which is much more susceptible to rain fade. Couple that with the aiming problems one would expect with the new five orbital location dish, and there may be some problems with...
