So where are you? Columbus? Most of my past 4 years have been spent in Columbus working ... yes, a 90-minute commute. - Shane

Fall 2007 HDTV Study - Win a Toshiba HD DVD Player

Hi all, It's time again for our semi-annual HDTV Study. We are giving away several great prizes this time around. Probably of most interest to readers of this forum are 2 Toshiba HD DVD players. But we're also giving away 2 OPPO upconverting DVD players and an OPPO HDMI switch. But apart from...

    HDDVD Top Ranking @ Amazon

I don't think anyone's been declared the winner yet this week ... how 'bout we give HD DVD a turn ;-) - Shane

    $99 HD DVD A2 - sorta

Did you read the follow-up at the Dossier? Apparently a Toshiba rep says they (Toshiba) have nothing to do with this offer and it does not represent an official manufacturer's price drop or a new marketing strategy by the HD DVD camp. Looks like the Home Media Expo is just trying to get...

    Hope for HD-DVD?

But let them compete a while longer and get the prices down on both players and media ... then one of them can go the way of the Dodo. - Shane

LG Combo Player not delivering everthing?

There are no facts behind this link. It links to another blog making claims, but all they reference is the original press release. What facts to they have the HDi (no longer called iHD) is not supported? But the bottom line is that if it doesn't support HDi, then it is not an HD DVD player. -...

    Xbox 360 Hd-dvd

No ... is the short answer. The longer answer is Yes, IF it is a dual format disc. Some HD DVD's come with both the "Standard DVD" and "HD DVD" versions on a single disc. Meaning that the disc can be used in both players. But Standard DVD players cannot play HD DVD content. BTW, this "Dual...

    Xbox 360 Hd-dvd

That's a highly subjective question. I'd say yes. Resolution aside, if you do make the investment you will then be able to start investing your media dollars in next-generation HD DVD media instead of standard DVD. Will you spend $200 in DVD's between now and whenever you decide to upgrade?

    Xbox 360 Hd-dvd

What I remember hearing from Microsoft is that you will need to hook up the Xbox 360 via VGA cable to get 1080p. I assumed you could still get 1080i & 720p via component. What is your connection? Have you tried 1080i or 720p setting? - Shane Sturgeon

    Xbox 360 Hd-dvd

DTS is a mandatory codec for HD DVD. They couldn't call it one without support of DTS. Unless you are referring to DTS HD, which is an optional codec. - Shane

    Xbox 360 Hd-dvd

Very well explained Kevin ... but a few clarifications: 1080p is only supported via VGA connection. As I understand, the component connection will only support up to 1080i. AACS/ICT will require reduced resolutions over any output that does not support HDCP. The clarification I want to...

    Xbox 360 Hd-dvd

The Xbox 360 does not have an HDMI output. My understanding (untested) is that you can get 720p or 1080i out of component connection from the Xbox 360 ... and if you want 1080p, you'll need the VGA cable. You will get 1080i out of the Toshiba over either component or HDMI ... UNLESS the movie...

    Xbox 360 Hd-dvd

I pre-ordered mine from Amazon, at which time they told me it would ship on the 7th. I checked the status yesterday and it had been rescheduled for shipment on the 16th. It makes me wonder if there are supply problems with the first shipment, or if MS decided to delay shipment for another week...

    Xbox 360 Hd-dvd

It's going to take more than just Windows drivers and an MPEG-4 decoder. The HD DVD add-on is only streaming the data from the disc to the console ... no processing occurs at all on the drive. That means that not only will your PC have to recognize the drive and be able to decode the video ...

    HD-A2 or Xbox add on

The proof will be in the pudding, but from the spec sheet, it looks like the HD DVD add-on is the better deal at the moment. Some significant factors that play into this assessment: 1. Video quality - If the video is poorer on the add-on (I would not expect it to be better), that would be...

    Copying HD DVD's.

There's no need to, AACS (which is the cryptography standard used on both HD DVD and Blu-Ray) supports "managed copy", which means you will be able to make copies of the movie directly through your player as long as you have somewhere to store them (attached media server). - Shane
