How about a Poll -> Are Dual Format Players Gaining Ground ?

I'm not sure why we're calling HD-DVD the "red" side. I believe both are using blue lasers of the same wave length. As to the cost of a dual format player.... I absolutely agree that it's currently too high (that's why I went with a $300 dual format drive in a media pc). But, if the...

How about a Poll -> Are Dual Format Players Gaining Ground ?

Of course. But the prices will likely come down. The original (crappy) LG was $1000. The new Samsung and LG units just came out and the price has already fallen to $750-800.

How about a Poll -> Are Dual Format Players Gaining Ground ?

With so many exclusive titles on both sides I decided not to choose. I can play both. For me the format war is mostly over. I suppose the only risk is if one format wins and my player dies (leaving me w/ unplayable discs). I'm curious, how many of you can play both formats ? Edit: What...

A Retail Perspective on the Format War

Using the profit logic, would a couldn't a retailer ultimately make more money if he could move a higher volume of the cheaper HD player? That's more consumers to start buying Hi-Def DVDs. At this point I think it's either Blu-Ray or Dual Format players. With so many exclusive titles on...

HDTV Format War: Studios Take Charge

The Total HD Disc seems stupid.... Why would we want to get hit up for double royalities for every disc purchased? I'd rather have a dual format player and only get hit for double royality once. Maybe the original author is right and Blu-Ray will just take over.

LG's Dual HD DVD and Blu-ray player

They may not be allowed. I believe not all HD DVD special features are supported.

Rumor: Harry Potter HD DVD might be released on August 29!

It's ok, but it would be WAY cooler to release all the Harry Potter's as a box set.

More delays in the Blu-ray camp

Perhaps this has been posted already but it looks like the Sony player has slipped to 8/15 (is that considered Autumn?). ("Targeted Availability" doesn't sound overly optimistic)

AACS copy protection for Blu-ray disc and HD DVD delayed again

Perhaps, but without without AACS sign-off the content providers (MPAA) could potentially shut down the whole thing before it ever startes.

AACS copy protection for Blu-ray disc and HD DVD delayed again

Perhaps the blu-ray people are refusing to sign-off on the AACS spec because of "possible" contention with BD+ (sounds like they have to co-exist on blu-ray discs).

AACS copy protection for Blu-ray disc and HD DVD delayed again

If this is true, then Toshiba has already missed the March release. For March, players and discs would have to be in production yesterday. This really helps the blue ray camp (since their release isn't till the end of the year). Maybe that's the real reason the blu-ray camp is whining.

TOSHIBA INTRODUCES LINE-UP OF FIRST HD DVD PLAYERS for the U.S. MARKET

Yea sure, but download to what? Is there a Hard Drive or DVD recorder in there I don't know about? Perhaps they are talking about real-time streaming, but that's a whole different ball game (and not likely to be HD). Perhaps the Ethernet port is REALLY for updating encryption keys if some...

TOSHIBA INTRODUCES LINE-UP OF FIRST HD DVD PLAYERS for the U.S. MARKET

What else can this thing play? mp3? xvid? divx? What's the ethernet port for?

Blu-ray appears to have the DVD lead

There's no effect on the cost of players. While the first movies aren't using mpeg4, the format (and players) still support it (unless someone has herd something different). So, the capacity is there if it's needed.
