5 TB Drives ... Will WD be first?

I'm exactly with you.. I've had my share of drive crashes which have cost me data.. That's why I built a file server to begin with. Everything is stored there, including rolling backup images of my other machines. The array has 7x2TB drives in RAID-5 (12TB online) plus a hot spare.. If a drive...

5 TB Drives ... Will WD be first?

Exactly.. Pressed discs such as manufactured CDs, DVDs, BluRays, etc do have archival longevity as long as they don't get scratched.. But burnt discs aren't as durable. The dye layer begins to break down nearly as soon as they are manufactured. Any type of oil - including skin oil - that gets...

5 TB Drives ... Will WD be first?

Not only that but do you print photos yourself or do you have them done at the photo lab? If you do them yourself, even with the best paper and inks, they start fading within a few years. And god help you if they get wet. I'd trust my RAID-5 arrays over burned optical media every day of the...

5 TB Drives ... Will WD be first?

... which is why retail boxed drives over 2.5TB come with a HBA card.

    SSD...Worth it?

Interesting. I was under the impression that it contained the repair tools, regardless of bitlocker. I've done hundreds of installs of all different versions of Windows and I never actually paid attention whether the reserve partition was in all of them.. If you restart your computer and hit...

    SSD...Worth it?

Here you go.. It does show the reserved partition in the disk manager, but it will not show up in Explorer as a lettered/accessible drive.

    SSD...Worth it?

You mean the 100mb partition? Yes it does. It just does not have an actual drive letter. It is only accessible from the emergency startup/F8 menu (Repair your computer). I can't be sure because I'm not near a computer right now but I believe it does show up in the disk management console (run >...

    SSD...Worth it?

Its not really necessary to have a large SSD in all honesty unless you only have one drive bay to work with (such as with a laptop). I have a pair of 64gb SSDs in one of my PowerEdge servers (RAID-1) as the system drive (this one boots even faster than the other one which has a pair of 15k RPM...

    SSD...Worth it?

Actually that is an issue with an old firmware in the OCZs. If the computer were to sleep under certain conditions and then wake back up immediately, the drive controller would go into a 'panic lock', rendering the drive unusable. I had that happen to one of my Vertex2's. It was replaced under...

    APC - 750VA Battery Back-Up System

I'm not sure about that particular UPS, but I would never buy one without a USB port and software to automatically shut the computer down when the battery runs low. No matter which one you get, a safe and code-accepted way around the 2 prong outlet situation is to replace the outlet with a...

Court Rules Copying DVD now Illegal.

Therefore preventing fair use of copy protected media.. Duhrrr. Making a copy for ones own personal use - whether it be space shifting or personal network distribution falls within everyone's definition of fair use.. well, almost everyone's. And would you please be so kind as to point out...

Court Rules Copying DVD now Illegal.

Lol, I think the problem is people watch too much CSI.. Their perception of what is actually technically possible by the police is radically skewed. And one more thing, laws like this can not be applied retroactively. So even assuming it does stick, your existing rip collection is exempt. Any...

Court Rules Copying DVD now Illegal.

The PATRIOT act is gradually being dismantled piece by piece as DHS gets sued for unconstitutional provisions.. Take the "sneak and peek" provision allowing the fbi to break in and search for probable cause for example.. Problem is until someone sues, there is no problem. And not just anyone...

PC World's list of 17 Technologies that will die soon... are they right?

3d glasses aren't going to die anytime soon. The technology behind 'glassessless' 3d (parallax barrier) that they use on the nintendo 3ds and htc evo 3d do not scale in any useful way to a large screen in a living room or theater. RealD style polarization glasses are the best technology right...

    BUILDING A NOOA ANTENNA?

Hey, I just noticed this topic.. I'm definitely not one to put someone down for tinkering, I'm a ham and love building antennas. I like the design and best of all it didn't cost anything.. But just wanted to let you know before you start spending on materials for a 'permanent' one, Radioshack...

    Router issue with 50MB service

How many people do you think actually use the button? It'd be a safe bet that its a very small number, and the ones that do probably also wear a tinfoil hat. The router is an 'out of sight out of mind' piece of hardware that you don't even think about until it screws up and needs a reboot...

    Ipad or kindle?

If you're only going to be using it for ebooks, definitely go with the Kindle. Its screen is as close to print on paper as you can get. Reading on an ipad for any amount of time hurts your eyes. Then there's the problems with glare and non-readability in bright light.

    Router issue with 50MB service

I'd bet anything that no one who gave it a bad review had DD-WRT on it. Stock firmware sucks in pretty much any router. TBH the button to turn off the radio is a bit silly. It can be done in the configuration page on all routers, and with DD-WRT you can even have it turn on and off...

for you old geeks out there -Commodore 64 is reborn

Oh man I loved my C64.. It was my first computer, and I did have the cassette drive for it. The best part was I got all my games for free (this was before I even knew about BBS's). The computer lab at school had C64's and tape, and being an AV geek, I had access to the dubbing deck.. :D

    Router issue with 50MB service

They have no interest in nor obligation to providing FREE support for 3rd party hardware. If you want them to support you, then you have to use their hardware only. That's just the way it works. Because when you use their hardware, they know how it is supposed to be set up and what the...
