    Need advice on computer purchase.

just echoing the advice here - build your own and get xP or buy a prebuilt w/ Vista (trash that it is), and then pick up a copy of xp or even 2000Pro. Given your application, that might make sense - check out eBay for some deals. I don't think you would run into any connectivity issues with...

Windows 7 Will Take Less Memory More Efficient

Totally concur. I haven't seen anything but bloatware. Every advance in memory or speed seems to have been countered by a slower more memory hogging software. We can hope, but I would be surprised. At least the OS has gotten somewhat more stable since XP.

    CompUSA has risen!

I'm with you... :) Well I guess I can hope that Sytemax dismantles everything so the name is all that remains of the old Compusa. We'll see. I will probably gather up a little garlic before visiting one of their stores.

    Wireless router suggestions??

I agree with jayn-j if you don't have a network (or plan to use other peripherals like game machines (Wii for example), go with a conventional 4-port router or switch. If you want to go wireless you have a choice to make. Probably wireless-G will be adequate, but since you will be paying about...

    Linux

Well stated. I too was going to recommend slackware. Linux is easy if you have some exposure to Unix. If all you know is Windows, besides sympathy there's not much I can offer neutron. I think I would recommend tackling Unix first(there used to be some freeware unix OS's out there), then Linux...

    do registry cleaners really work?

Thanks to ALL :up I downloaded and ran CCleaner. It helped a lot. Its still not like it was when new - but definitely an improvement. I may still try a fresh install of XP after New Year's. The last time I tried that it took me quite a while to rebuild all the applications. I have Ghost now...

Went to Fry's today for the first time

Frys is a great place. I wish I had one close by. Instead I order online. Great prices in general, especially if you take advantage of their specials. No complaints from me.

    do registry cleaners really work?

Its been about 1.5 years. I am reluctant to reformat as xp has that silly reactivation thing w/ microsoft -- its cumbersome and I suspect I will have to call a rep and wait on hold to do so.

    do registry cleaners really work?

I have an install of XP Pro which is showing some signs of sluggishness. Also, I have a great deal of trouble uninstalling a Brother printer driver/software (finally had to get a custom uninstall tool from Brother, and even then am not sure it did a good job). Do registry cleaners like Registry...

    Considering a Mac questions...

I totally agree - give the MacBook Pro a try. Shane - I like your idea of using a 9600 for a music server. I have an old 9600 myself gathering dust, might just give that a try. As already pointed out in the thread - the principle problem with macs is the availability of some software. Video &...
