wring, What does the point-dish screen indicate as your signal strength? Frequent audio dropouts are often associated with a poorly aligned dish.

VOOM STB FAQ - comments and suggestions

Ilya, The pictures in the users guide are so small and so highly compressed as to be almost worthless. I certainly don't think you need to duplicate the users guide. Instead, just include one or two shots so members--who don't yet have VOOM--can get a basic idea of how the UI works and what...

For its DVR, I do hope VOOM will bundle a remote similar to this one.

Best Remote to Use for Voom and my HT???

Ilya, I don't think think so, buut I'll test it with the VOOM box tomorrow to be sure. I've attached a picture of the Comcast remote, if you are curious. They also use this remote with their Motorola 6208 HD DVR. I still think the URC-200 and MX-700 are superior to this remote in every way.

Best Remote to Use for Voom and my HT???

fish, The manufacturer of the MX-800 released some more affordable RF remotes back in January. These include the URC-200 and URC-300. The MX-800 is still their best RF-capable remote, but it commands a hefty price. The URC-200, pictured below right, runs about $180 with the MRF-100 RF...

New Sat Scheduled to Launch in Oct, x2 capacity

Let's not forget, the new 72 degrees slot requires a much larger dish -- about 20" x 35" as compared to 18" x 18". The larger dish is required because it's a FSS slot; FSS slots reside every two degrees (DBS uses nine degree spacing), so a larger elliptical dish is necessary to differentiate...

    VOOM STB Version 00.05.68: Features/Bugs/Requests

Set-top Box & Remote Wish List Add OTA scanning, with channel mapping ability for primary and secondary markets (ex: DC & Baltimore stations). Add point-antenna screen or other means to easily access OTA signal strength to aid in antenna pointing. Eliminate stutters on both locals and...

    VOOM STB Version 7.26 (2.30): Features/Bugs/Requests

Set-top Box & Remote Wish List When displaying guide, move to current channel, rather than channel 100. Do this on favorites too! Using channel up/down should always skip channels that you don't subscribe to -- it should not give the user a black screen, as it does now. Add at least two...

Rainbow Filed form 10 yesterday....big news!

Two smaller dishes is not an option. FSS spectrum is licensed every two degrees, and thus the larger dish necessary to differentiate 72 degrees from 70. There is no DBS spectrum (i.e. for a second dish) available for lease, and VOOM does not have another satellite to launch to a different DBS...

    Cablevision's Voom encountering startup problems

Keep in mind DirecTV requires every new customer to commit to a year of service. As soon as VOOM requires a commitment, or adds some incentive for the customer to commit, their churn should drop substantially. As range1995 notes, VOOM also had money back guarantee with five months of free...

Speculation on future packages come January 1, 2005... Possibility #1 VOOM Basic - $39.90/mo and includes VOOM "exclusives", current "cable favorites" at higher quality, plus an additional ~10 SD channels (SciFi, HGTV, FOOD, USA, Discovery Science, etc), including your regional sports...

As has been said in the past, their upgrade card will do both MPEG4 and WM9. They'll use whatever delivers the best results. Availability and maturity of the appropriate encoders (on VOOM's end) will also play a role. The current expectation is that they'll use WM9 eventually, but not...

Yes, 72 degrees is a FSS slot. There are two models of the Superdish used by Dish Network; the sizes were 24" x 34" and 21" x 36". IIRC, the 24" x 34" is now the most common model.

It's not clear to me what they are talking about here -- the 16 transponders they'll have as of January 2005, the 19 they'll have as of January 2006, or potentially all 24 by January 2007. There's nothing that would prevent them from using MPEG-4 or WM9 on AMC-6. Keep in mind that the...

Rainbow Filed form 10 yesterday....big news!

I don't see how what I said is false. "Bled cash" is just another way to say that more cash (from operations) was going out than coming in. Dish reported a loss in every year from 1996 until 2003, do you agree? In any event, the point is that one or two annual losses isn't going to break a...

Rainbow Filed form 10 yesterday....big news!

As far as DTV/HDTV locals, time is in VOOM's favor. The technology for off-air reception improves every year, and could see a significant boost when the LINX "Casper" demodulator ships in September, 2005. Over time, more and more networks will broadcast their signals in higher power, thereby...

Rainbow Filed form 10 yesterday....big news!

DirecTV only recently began turning a profit. Dish Network bled cash every year from 1996 to 2003. Check that, they are still bleeding cash -- they lost $43 million last quarter. That's not to say VOOM can withstand last eight years in the red, and they will need to sell their business plan...

Best Remote to Use for Voom and my HT???

I think the H748 is better suited for those with basic cable and a DVD player. It lacks dedicated buttons for guide, menu, exit, and info, which you really need for a satellite or digital cable STB. You can access these buttons using the LCD, but it's not as intuitive as having dedicated...

    Voom to add Encore HD

Sean, Ignoring for the moment whether or not such a press release should be issued in the first place.. It would not be appropriate for VOOM to issue a press release to correct a statement by a programming partner. Any such release would have to be cleared with Starz's marketing and legal...
