The Red Sox were also very interested in Kahnle. I know he's battled some arm issues recently, but I always liked his stuff when he was on the Yankees the first time. Oh well

I remember Reggie Jackson being the first million dollar player!

When I was a freshman in high school in 1981 (damn I'm old ), I did an essay about lucrative contracts in sports. The main subject of my essay was Dave Winfield, who had just signed the first $2M per year contract in North American sports history with the Yankees.

The Judge stays with the Yanks

As a Red Sox fan I love this signing.

I like Judge but to me he's too injury prone to warrant that kind of deal. He doesn't produce in the postseason (.211 BA, .462 SLG). And, how many of these types of long term, big money deals for a player 30Y+ ever work out?

These contracts are all front loaded with the knowledge that the final 4 years will be worthless.

Yep, I'm aware of that. It's not the value at the end of the deal I was referring to, it's the overall player performance after signing these monster contracts.
I don't think the Yankees wanted to go over 8 but they know they could not lose judge.

To me giving pitchers mega deals is stupid. They pitch every 5 days barely 6 innings a game.

While I agree with your sentiment, at the same time it's small comfort since our own team has been relegated to "dumpster diving" status. While I don't want the Red Sox to be stupid and go all Pablo Sandoval and Hanley Ramirez on us, it would be nice if they signed a front line free agent or two.

Or their own home grown talent.

They have to start with Xander and then lock up Raffy too.
