So I'd like to upgrade my current HDDVR (its a HR20-700) to a HR24 - basically for aesthetic purposes.

Would directv issue an account credit if I bought it from an independent seller?

You'll have to ask them ...

I've done this type of thing before.

Thanks, good to know.

What's the best way to go about it? Call and tell them I'm thinking about doing that, get the go ahead and buy the thing and they issue the credit after I activate the new receiver?

Only DIRECTV can tell you how they are going to treat you.

If you're off commitment, there's probably a better chance you can work something favorable out.

You're stuck once you buy it because you must activate it. I would suggest that it is better to negotiate up front while you aren't committed to activating.

Yeah, I'm well out of commitment and haven't utilized too many credits so hopefully I can work something out.

In terms of size (small) and speed (fast - clearly) is the HR24 my best bet?

I would call them and see what they can do, let them know that you want a particular recvr model and they can't gaurentee you that model ... your wanting to order it online at a vendor such as Solid Signal or Dishstore and would like to know if they will credit you and you will return the one your currently using once it's activated.

They MAY give you a credit, or maybe not.
Alot may have to do with your current credit history, how long you've been with them if your payments are always up to date.

I'm not saying they aren't just thinking they may use that type of thing to decide to credit you.

Remember they may offer a different type of credit instead, such as if you have a Movie Channel, they may offer you a deal, $10 off for 12 months or maybe $ 20 off, don't know thus paying for your movie channel instead as long as the price is equal it really doesn't matter.

Yes.

Unless you want to get into the HR34, 5 tuners ect.

I had used my free equipment upgrade offer and DTV shipped me an old refurbished HR21, which I already have. So when calling to get a return label, I asked the rep about getting a credit if I buy the HR24. She had already mentioned Solid Signal as an option, and then got authorization from her supervisor to give me a $100 credit on my bill once I call to activate the HR24. So I thought that was nice of them. I ordered the HR24 through Solid Signal yesterday and 2 hours later, got a shipping notice and it arrives tomorrow. Can't wait to check it out and see the speed improvements. Very happy with the fast turnaround of my order. I'll keep them in mind if I need to add another device down the road.

Make sure to remind D* about the credit when you call to activate it.

Got my new HR-24 set up. I love the smaller box vs the HR-21 and the speed is MUCH improved. Very happy with this selection. Solid Signal was very fast processing my order. And DTV already issued my promised $100 credit towards my next bill.
