Hi !

While searching most folks ask about multiple TV's multiple rooms multiple everything.

My question is, if I swiitch to Dish and I have just one tv what are my recording options? With Directv I can watch one and record one or record 2 and watch a recorded program.
Will the hopper gizmo (no joeys) allow the same or more?

Thanks

If should post somewhere else just let me know.

Thanks again

Marc

The Hopper has 3 tuners so you would be able to watch something and record two other things or record 3 things and watch something recorded. You can also record up to 6 things if you used Primetime Anytime.

The ota dongle will give you access to all the sub channels broadcast in your area. Plus if you are close enough to another city, you may be able to receive channels from that city. My DNMA is Rochester NY, but I'm also able to receive all the Syracuse stations.

Actually, it depends what channels you are recording. The Big 4 network and two satellite channels can record at the same time anytime if you have timers set for total of six channels. Add OTA and that makes seven channels recording at the same time. If all timers are recording, you can watch a recording or watch one of the channels that is recording.

A conventional DISH ViP DVR can also watch/record two satellite channels at once. If you have OTA access, it can record that in addition (the DIRECTV DVRs are limited to two channels period). On Thursdays, I'm often recording three channels at once on my well worn ViP622.

The Hopper is more on a par with the DIRECTV Genie; both of which are probably overkill for your situation (though that's probably where they'd like to lead everyone).

I wouldn't pay Hopper fees if you have just one TV, and yes you can still get the same DVR setup as DirecTV with 2 tuners. Then the question would be if you need HD or not.

I would pay it. The Hopper is awesome. IMHO all the extra features are well worth the $5 a month extra.

I am a single man with a Hopper and a second mirrored TV. It all depends on your viewing habits. I would not be without my Hopper, the features are well worth it to me. On the question of more tuners, it does not make any difference if you only have one TV. There are often times when several shows are on at the same time and I want to record them all. With PTAT and three tuners, I seldom miss anything that I want to record.

It all depends on how much you like to record. If you like to record a lot of shows, especially ones on at the same time, it's worth having the Hopper. Don't forget that with the Hopper with Sling you get the Sling ability and WiFi capability.

If all he cares for is just to watch TV while recording another and budget is a concern he would be just fine with a 722.
