Recording from Dish box to DVD recorder

I need some help. We have not yet turned in our Dish receiver after switching to AT&T U-Verse in hopes of recording some of the saved programs from the Dish box to our new DVD recorder. Here's how the system was set up after we got U-Verse: Co-ax came into the U-Verse box, then to the DVD recorder, then to the TV; audio/video input/output cables were connected correctly.
When I set up to try to record from the Dish box, I disconnect U-Verse from the DVD recorder and switch the "to TV" co-ax from the DVD recorder to the Dish receiver, and plug in the Dish box. I can watch programs recorded on the Dish hard drive on our TV's channel 3, but when I set the DVD to record Channel 3 while I'm playing a program, I get dead air on the recording. I can watch a regular DVD while in this makeshift configuration but cannot record. Any suggestions (even RTFM -- Read The F****** Manual) can be e-mailed to spdulas@yahoo.com.
Thanks.

For better quality use s-video cable for video and rca for the audio. Out of the dish box into the dvd recorder. Use rf cable as last resort.
