The PlayStation Vue Thread

Many times.

I have had all mentioned and the new hulu live service.

Vue, for me, stands clearly above the others.

The pq is better (DirecTV now is close too), the number of streams at one time is higher.

The DVR works in every channel, and the channels that I want are available cheaper overall despite a higher base price. For example during football season, even though sling is cheaper initially , by the time I add the packs for the sports channels I would want then, it is higher than Vue.

Hulu covers the bases cheapest for me, but the interface is a nightmare imo, and it's in 30fps vs 60 on Vue, which isn't the best for sports.

So for me, Vue wins. My next choice would be DirecTV now, as it has improved since launch.

So, I took a longer look at Vue today. One thing I notice is a lack of Viacom channels. Is there a contract dispute or something?

Vue abruptly dropped Viacom channels last fall without explanation beyond saying it wanted to offer its customers the best value. (i.e., money was the issue) This is a common theme for Viacom so I don't expect them to ever come back. I personally don't miss them, though it's weird not having Comedy Central.

Yeah, CC is really the only channel I would miss.

They were dropped some time ago, as has already been stated since you asked me.

If I am not mistaken, several competitors don't have them, and they are looking at having their own stand alone online service soon.

Seems that way. In interviews, the head of Viacom is not very supportive of cord cutting.

Good to see that Vue is adding more and more locals. Living in Sioux Falls SD area means it will be a LONG time before I see mine on there. But I can always hope!

What's with that "Decades" channel that popped up today? Why not give us something worthwhile like "History" or "Hallmark" instead of junk like that? And while you're at it, how about the Cleveland NBC channel?

I would like to have the Hallmark channel. Well, let me rephrase, I would like to have the Hallmark Channel to make my wife happier with Vue.

Decades channel is pretty cool. Last night they had Dick Cavett interviewing Mickey Mantle. I would love to see them add digital channels such as that, Laff, Grit, MeTV, etc.

Please post back if they ever do!

Both Sling TV and DirectvNow carry the Viacom channels. However, Sling is missing Nickelodeon/Nick at Nite. But I have the Viacom channels with DirectvNow and find value with many of them.

Hit another interesting road block with switching to Vue...

Thanks to yalls' advice, I was going to with Amazon Fire TV Box with Vue for the best GUI. I agree from videos I watched, it is the best. I love watching college football and the locals with Vue are a big plus for this, but one major issue...

Only 30 fps for ESPN & almost all channels on Fire TV :(. Apparently it is 60 fps on PS4 but for some reason locked down on Fire TV. Based on article wording assuming it is 60 fps on Roku or Chromecast. Odd.

If Fire TV Vue app supported ESPNs in 60 fps, I'd likely switch. I could overlook 30 fps on locals. 30 fps + 720p vs 60 fps in 1080i (in some cases) is a difference. ESPN is 720p regardless IIRC.

Anyone run into this? Obviously more of an issue for sports fans.

More info:
Sony’s PlayStation Vue fares better, supporting 60 frames per second on the same channels and programs that cable does. But there is one odd exception: Amazon’s Fire TV Stick only streams Vue at 30 frames per second. You might think this is a hardware limitation, but keep in mind the Fire TV Stick does stream at the higher rate with other services, such as MLB TV.

and interesting fact on Sling ESPN fps for comparison:
While Sling TV does support 60 frames per second on all ESPN channels—and across all devices—all other channels are dialed back to 30 frames per second. That’s too bad, because Sling’s $25-per-month Orange package is still the cheapest way to get March Madness coverage on TNT, TBS, and TruTV without a cable subscription.
