I wonder how many peoples remotes are going to be accidentlly broken and have to be replaced by dish in Q2 by the dish protection plan lol. I know I have about 6 one might accidently make it in the blender, one might make it in the washer, a snow bank. lol

I believe OP was talking about "accicents" with older remotes that would be (hopefully) replaced by the newer ones. But I don't see that happening.

I say if it isn't broken why re-invent the wheel again? DISH has had the same type of remote control design for years and most DISH subs know how to use it just fine. Now they have gone from IR to UHF and now RF ,but they all look similar and work similarly. The only gripe I have is, why they can't make a back lite version of the current remote control? I guess that the tech guys who love the newest design will like the new remote control. So at least they will have something new to play with.:biggrin2

They are going to continue with the 40.0, but I think the new remotes are going to be a way to attract the techie crowd alittle more.

Just like the 722, I would assume they would replace it with like remotes until there are none in stock, and if they continue making the 40.0, then it will always be in stock. I am wondering how the ordering system is going to track which remote you order. I will admit, I plan to be one of those that orders the new remote. Got permission from the GF and everything. (I forgot what she wanted in return, but I know I am going to regret it.)

I would love to have a voice command remote. Would make it a lot easier to find your shows. Would be cool if it worked like Siri telling it what you wanted it to do.

Why didn't they make a back-lit version of current or past remotes... Cost, that's why

I can operate my unlit remote for my HWS in the dark. I can feel the buttons and know exactly what each ones use is for the buttons that I use, especially the 30 second skip.
Same here. I very rarely look at the buttons. I've been using the same remote for so long it's almost like knowing where the keys on a keyboard are.

It would be nice for some that want to keep existing remote (40.0) to add voice function to it. I did not notice a search button on the voice remote. Does that mean it will automatically open up or that there is a "trick" to get it to come up so that you can use a voice command to search for the show that you want?

Quite the contrary: My eldery mother is looking forward to the new remote, especially the Voice Command. She finds the current remotes far too confusing with too many buttons and hard to read because so many buttons have to be crammed onto the remote. She can't really use some of the features that she really wants to use because of the current remotes overwhelming design of far too many buttons and too small to press and see well.

Further, my other elderly relatives absolutely LOVE the Roku remotes precisely because they have just a few buttons and are very intuitive and for the quick response and fairly easy way to type in characters.

This new Dish remote is REALLY a good thing and it is where we are at today and the future as far as remotes: a few buttons as possible and some voice commands for what used to be very complex, several button pushing, layers of menus to just search for a show or access settings, etc.

Also, Dish (and others) have no choice but to emulate the SmartPhone/Tablet experience on their remotes because so many people today are familiar with it and provides much less of a learning curve to use a new Dish remote and also because it is more like a SmartPhone/Tablet it is also more intuitive.

EXCELLENT Dish. You are going in the proper direction as far as remotes

I'm going to change a few but my other half is absolutly against any change of the remote period. So we will just have two per TV one on my side of the couch one on his side. And again I still might not like it voice control seems a little gimmicky to me. Maybe the future has caught up with us but I'm not ready for it. LOL

I also think a new remote with fewer buttons is a good thing as it can simply things for some people. It is good to have a choice of remotes as people can choose whether to keep their old one or to get the new one. I want the voice command one when it comes out.

Well, if one can still use and read and easily press the buttons on the old remote, then the new remote may not be for you or others. For example, I have NO plans to get the new remote for me because I can operate the current ones just fine, but dear old mom can't, and she can't wait for the new remotes more simple design and voice control, which to her is all about not having to read and fiddle with the small buttons on the current remote and the current remotes being just plain overwhelming to her when she want to access other features. I'm with ya in that I don't "need" the new remote, but old people who have some problems should do well with it.

I can search from Dish Anywhere and even use voice for it to type the text in for me using Siri.
They don't have keyboard input in the Android app. (Not that I can find, anyway.) If they did, I could also use voice search, as the Andoid keyboard has voice recognition. (probably longer than iOS has had it, actually.)

EDIT: After digging deeper, I see that I can search from within the app. It's a bit klugey the way Dish does it. But, I can use the Android keyboard, and thus voice.

But, and this is a big but, it's a search for within the app itself. It's not using the Remote Control function of the app to search on the Hopper, which is what I would like to do.
