Will the 722/k get an upgrade to the menu software that the 922 has. The GUI on the 922 is much better than the 722 and would be great if the 722 got this upgrade. Anyone heard anything? I understand most features will not work like the 922 but just a simple GUI update would be great.

If they can make a buck more off the ViP922 over the ViP722x, they'll keep that difference for the incentive value.

That would be great but I got to agree with the above posters, it would be great by why would Dish do that when they can make more $$$ and another commitment. Just having us getting the new recievers even though we may already have a sling box hooked up already

I agree as well. I'm guessing never. Too much work to make a change like that with no real return.

The 722k (not the original 722) has essentially the same hardware as the 922 (without the sling and with a smaller hard drive, of course) so it's definitely possible. As for will they do it? Probably not.

Probably not; which sucks. It would be nice to have a uniform "branding," if you will, across the devices. Take away some functionality for some of the lesser devices, but give us the guide updates (like colors, overall look, channel logos...)

Oh well...

If I recall a statement from Scott when this was asked some time ago, there is enough of a hardware difference to prevent it from happening.

it's been reported that the 722k has the same latest-gen BCM7400 processor and shares much of the same code base as the 922, so it's been assumed it could handle a similar HD GUI. Like many others have said though, it's likely E* will have it remain exclusive to the 922 for product differentiation.

Does Dish really make money off of hardware upgrades? I really don't have much of an idea but as far as I know, the boxes are pretty expensive to make and dish generally only charges a "relatively low" monthly fee for them. Would handing out 922s (even for a one time fee) really bring Dish more money?

I would imagine that the greater benefit of better hardware is that it attracts new customers and keeps your existing customers happy instead of letting your competition beat you out of hardware.

Over the years, I think Dish makes money off hardware. Especially since people getting high end boxes probably have larger monthly bills for bigger programming packages.
