Are you ready for 5G? Well, Apple is not!

buying a 5g phone today is like buying a car when you live on the upper slope of Mount Everest

Maybe in 3 years, probably more like 5 other than some city centers.
It's like the chicken and the egg.
You need the phone to make the network investment pay and you need the network to justify the phone.
Which comes first?

In the famous words of Kevin Costner's grandfather, played by Burt Lancaster in Field of Dreams: "If you build it they will come."

The 5G radio chips are "cheap" to put in the new phones. Even without 5G infrastructure everywhere, plenty of phones will have 5G radios.

I’d say it’d be a problem if they WERE NOT shunned.

Today, but with Qualcomm's new chips, that shouldn't be a problem.
Your statement sounded like a projection based on numbers, not a simple reasoning.
More of a problem is the shunning of Huawei and ZTE's 5G infrastructure hardware by countries. Japan bans Huawei and ZTE 5G networking hardware; will Canada be next?
This is networking gear and has little to do with phones, tablets or IoT stuff. Pretty much anyone can understand why you wouldn't want a router or smart switch from a country with a overwhelmingly negative interest in personal privacy and a relatively long track record of corporate espionage. Meanwhile back on the security front, nobody has given Cisco the hard line they deserve for their sloppy software (security and attack vulnerabilities) so it may appear prejudicial.
