So who's jumping ship? and a message to Charlie

Now that D* became the first provider to provide not only movies, but sports and entertainment related programming, all in HD all the time! Who's jumping ship? I saw this coming! People here never believed me. Between Dish loosing channels (even if they didn't loose the Disney channels) and D* now launching a boat load of movie channels, its hard not to take a look at Directv. With these movie launches, Dish just lost the upper hand in the movie arena which was the only place dish had a stronghold of in the programming department.

Charlie,

I don't know what it is but when I start screaming, maybe you all should take a look and actually do what I'm saying. Im screaming for a reason, and its not that I want to complain, (I hate to do it, but I love the company so much that Ill play the heel (bad guy) if it gets you to change for the better) God forbid I'm actually right! BTW I'm 5 for 5 in all of my predictions. Hate to say it but I told you so! Now what's gonna happen from here, is were going to start seeing subscriber losses, It wont happen over night, but it works like Novocaine, slow and effective. The advertising department might keep the ship afloat for a while (maybe just enough) but we will eventually see it, if the status quo stays the same.

The only way to fix this, is repair the damage with Disney, Rainbow Media, and launch HD RSN's. From there you might have to work some magic with the MLB, and maybe with the NFL once Sunday ticket renewal comes up in a few years. It's not to late to repair the damage, but it will take allot of work. You still can be Number One, but it takes swallowing your pride and doing the unthinkable to get it done.

If you don't start now, especially with the transition to MPEG4 on WA, you might not be able to repair the ship before its fully sunk. D* just gave you a strong shot to your bow, how are you gonna respond? I'm, available for hire, if you want your problems fixed. But its gonna come, without any conditions.

Charlie, Your a good man, and a good friend, You just need to listen to the young people like me.. I'm not going to steer you wrong, not like others. You have nothing to worry about as I have nothing but love, even if it means breaking up like a bad relationship. You have a true ally with me, even if it doesnt appear like that. I just wish you guys would listen and respond quicker, because you wouldnt be in this situation if you did.

So let me see if I understand you correctly.

Charlie is sticking up for the consumer by saying no to rate increases, so you want to thank him for this by leaving!?!

All the other providers need to grow a set and do the same thing to put a stop to the greed and ridiculous price hikes coming from the programmers.

I've got news for you.....................this is just the beginning and it's only going to get worse now that the Networks want more money.

Feel bad for those who have HD only and may be missing channels now becouse of this, maybe during this time the SD feed should be given??

Is the grass really greener? I don't know. The advertising would make you think it might be, but the fine print will make your head spin. Just as soon as you jump to a new ship the old one will fix their leaks and voila you will be kicking your self in the rear!
Just before the Red Sox game started, last night, we were looking through the guide and it was the same old stuff. What is needed, in my opinion, is fresh bold programing, something new and different. I'm getting tired of the reality shows, and the repackaged exposes (48 hours on discovery etc). With 250 channels plus HBO and SHowtime it would seem we could find something new and different but it ain't there. I don't think it makes a difference which provider you choose, unless you want a specific channel (like MLB) that Dish doesn't carry.
We have been contemplating putting up an antenna and not paying for TV any more. To have one installed to feed 4 tvs (3 HD) would cost me a bit less than 4 months of paying for Dish, I guess I could do it for half that I really don't like the idea of climbing up on the roof (2 story with finished attic) to put the antenna on the chimney). The only thing that stops me is the Red Sox, no Satellite/Cable no Red Sox except when Fox carries them. That may not be a good reason to keep paying for TV but...
So we will stay put unless the competition gives us a really, really, good deal or we just decide to put up the antenna.
Oh ya a really good deal to me would be an whole house HD DVR, HD receivers for the two additional HD TV's, an SD receiver all with no lease fees, and to not have to pay any more than I do now for the equivalent package and 2 movie channels including HD free for life. I know this won't happen so like I said we will stay put unless we decide to ditch it all for an antenna.

I'm jumping. I've gotten their email replies explaining why my baseball games can't be on HD when Directv is carrying them on HD. And those explanations don't fly.
Can't get my locals in HD with Dish.
I bounced the channels in HD that I'll lose against what I'll gain, and it's a wash for my purposes. I called Directv this morning before even seeing this thread, so it didn't influence me - just confirmed I made a good decision.
Where's my $10 off for my "Free HD for life"? My bill hasn't changed. I understood it would be automatic, as I follow the criteria for it already.
I'm paying $97 now for 1 tv, and switching, I'll pay $51 the first year, and about $61 or so the 2nd.
I'll get my hd locals and my sports in hd.
Seems Directv can haggle with providers and give me good channels at a good price, why can't Charlie?
I know my situation is not anyone else's situation. It just works for me to switch. Might not work for my neighbor.

You don't mean to complain, and yet it seems to be all you do...

I believe if you want to leave, the appropriate thing to say is "don't let the door hitya where the good Lord splitya." Me, I'm staying put.

Im trying to improve dish by saying hey fix your stuff! While, this place is only 1 percent of the amount of subs that E* has, What might be a consensus here from very PRO Charlie can do nothing wrong fan base, could actually be hurting Charlie. I'm just about the only one who sees the issues dish is having and I'm willing to point them out. The consensus here is let's not listen and try to figure out solutions, instead were gonna send all people who have very different views out to the wolfs.

From some of the reading of posts, I dont think many would "Jump Ship" without any scentific data to back me many Dish subs seem to not be concerned with the drop of ESPN in HD

There have been a few already who said they are. Ultimately, it will be up to you or your programming needs, if dish meets them or not.

So let me see if I understand you correctly.

How is Charlie saving you any! You paid for a rate increase, and you lost channels? Also if you look at pricing points of other providers, Dish is only cheaper by a few bucks. Ultimately the providers are going to get pissed off enough and just say no to allowing Dish access to their programming. (Wich they are doing now) Unless you like the REELZ channel, or simular programming that sucks, Dish is only going to start loosing more channels. Time will tell.

Also, All this free HD programming that Charlie has been getting for all of these years, He should refund everyone's HD fees from the start as there was no additional cost other than internal costs at dish, to launch and maintain the programming. Those costs were fixed anyhow as they needed to replace the birds no matter what was beamed to them.

I love my set-up. A 922 with antenna hooked up to the OTA module. Works great and love all the recroding I can do.

Anyone know if Direct TV will pay my ETF? I can deal with the HDRSN situation and the disney channels pulled, but I'll probably have to go if ESPN goes away after the World Cup.

Bob do not forget that for families Disney is a must have. Has anyone here tried to put up with a three year old crying because she could not get her favorite Disney show?

Yes Disney will be back with dish at Disney prices and Charlie will claim this a victory.

Check on the Directv website under rebates, I belive there is a up to 200.00 EFT if you can show bill with EFT, but check the website

I'm afraid this thread isn't quite going your way, Bob.

Are you listening to or reading what you're writing?

Why do you think Dish is cheaper "by a few bucks"? Why do you think Charlie is fighting the programmers?

What are you going to do if you jump ship and your bill keeps going up because your new provider keeps bending over and taking what the programmers keep shoving up their A$$es? Jump ship again?

You obviously don't get it. You need to direct your anger toward the programmers. You need to inform the "Disney's" of the world that you are going to boycott anything they are involved with if they continue to raise fees. They are the ones who are screwing us, not the providers !!!

Are DirectTv receivers any better than they used to be? I used to have the HR-20, but switched back to dish because of the receiver. Programming for me is better on Direct, but I could not stand the receivers.

Please Bob

Please Bob do us a favor and list your 5 predictions by date and when they came true. 1 thing that is funny to me is you say you don't want to complain. I've been a member close to 4 yrs now and I just can't recall when you weren't B'n about something. I'm very confused by your post could you clear it up.

The 922 is the reason why I stayed with Dish. I will give the dish the upperhand in that they do have a better receiver. From the folks here who have Direct Tv I understand that their receiver has improved a whole lot.

I'm extraordinarily peeved that Dish did not use my newly commanded email login to let me know they were in a snit with Disney over HD. Personally, ABC Family has two of my favorite shows, and because they didn't tell me about this, one didn't record. I took to the phone and twitter to tell them how I feel. I also said if you force me to use an email login then have the decency to use the darn thing when you need to share information. They used the "SD channel has same programming" bit, but if it was the SAME, then it would be in HD and my DVR would have recorded it.

That said - I really am envious of the new channels offered over there...Showtime Beyond has long been a channel I want in HD. I can't imagine Dish will let them keep the channels to themselves for long.

Why do you care? If you like Dish, use their service. If you don't, go somewhere else. It's that simple.

You're appealing to the wrong people here. There's nothing any of us can do about this. You want to help Charlie? Bug Charlie. Or move on.

GB99:

No, you're screaming because you're a nut case. I've really come to believe that.

You have an excessively high opinion of your own opinion. Not everyone shares your opinion, which you seem to view as unassailable.

Nothing will come of your constant spleen venting except heartburn to yourself. NO ONE at ANY company is going to do anything just because you think it is the thing to do. Most will be gloriously oblivious to your rantings. ACCEPT IT and save yourself from getting all worked up over nothing.

This is not meant to be insulting, it's meant to get you to take a step back and reassess your posts. Do you really think Charlie or anyone else thinks that much of your opinion? Especially as it seems to get ever more shrill? Charlie has done quite well for himself, thank you, and no doubt is making the choices he feels are best. And his track record is a tad better than yours. He is, after all, a fully employed self made billionaire. He is not going to substitute his own judgment, backed by plenty of research and experience, with your desires (with or without a lot of people agreeing with you).

...I know my situation is not anyone else's situation. It just works for me to switch. Might not work for my neighbor.
That pretty well sums it up as far as I'm concerned.

Message to you younger folks out there: in the Grand Scheme Of Things, what's being discussed in this thread doesn't even make the top 25 as far as importance goes for this 5 decader plus guy. The frogs are always leaping and at any given time one is ahead of the others and their relative positions do change from time-to-time. No provider has the absolutely perfect package in every possible characteristic for anyone. We all have to compromise one way or another. When you don't like where you are anymore you can switch. Figure on moving again sometime in the future - the probability is high.

As for my situation: Maybe I'm complacent. Maybe I'm pragmatic. Maybe I'm just "slow" in my advanced age. But in any case, to be sure there are too many channels for me to watch now as it is, and even at that TV watching is NEVER my highest priority! But I know that may not be everyone's situation...!
