Under the Dome

This seems appropriate to repeat now... ;)

Do we have to repeat the same posts as with Revolution ?

Just watch it for the show and don't pick it apart ... unless thats your objective all along.

Fwiw, theres no holes in any of the Reality shows either ... right ...

But I am betting that the sewer system is either cut in half or the whole town is using septic systems. Just imagine how the crap would quickly fill up the dome with no way out for the waste to go.

I have central metered water and a septic tank. It's not that uncommon. Nice thing is no sewage fees on the water bill.

So now that Big Jim Rennie has found Angie in his family's fall-out shelter, the question is what does he do with her? Do we begin to see more of an evil persona?

He's in quite the bind.... I'm guessing he will leave her in there to drown and "dispose" of her body later. He can't release her and have her tell everyone that his son did it.

I'd think I'd be banning the use of wood stoves and outdoor fires as well, if I lived under a dome. I am surprised they didn't try to make the sky get dirty after the fire. Maybe they will.

If water can seep through, then why wouldn't air?

But don't they empty your septic system every now and again? At least you aren't stuck with it like they would be in the dome.

Nope? Only time that is needed is if storm drainage leaks in and fills it or it gets overloaded from too much laundry or a stuck running toilet.

Because it only seeps through - I think the idea is there is some exchange of air. the pollutants from a fire would easily build up against the wall of the dome, and could easily suck up the oxygen. Water came through in a mist, not like a river. Only a fraction of air would come through.

Once agin, this is where the TV show fails us. King explained the properties of the dome much better than I could do.

When this show is done, I'd recommend folks who are interested, read the book. :)

I'm reading the book now, however slowly, haven't gotten to the description of the dome yet...

Trying to keep the TV and the book separate while observing the vast differences.

Also, how and the heck does the small town of Chester's Mill have electricity and running water? I doubt such a small city would have their own dedicated power and water treatment plants. They would almost certainly have their power grid, water and sewage lines severed by the dome.
Water is easy, the town has a tower that maintains head pressure, and in the absense of pumps to fill it, maintains the water pressure up to the tank running out (which based on the size of the town should happen in a few days). Plus any cut lines (by the dome) should make it empty that much faster.

For electricity, they've said each of the places with power have generators. Problem with generators is that they run burn through gas pretty quickly. And the gas supply isn't infinate, especially when the gas stations don't have power to power the gas pumps. I lost my power for about a week because of a snowstorm back in 2011, and I was having to put gas in my generator every day. The way these people are running their houses, they should long be out of gas.

Sewage is the easiest. A town that size would have most people on septic, which requires no power. And the number on sewer is probably fairly low, so would take a long time to overwhelm a treatment plant. Any problems would be those on lines that require a ejector (uphill) pump.

Yep, that's why most houses with septic drain the laundry to the road ditch, a french drain, or even the back yard. Detergent kills the septic bacteria, and also you should never have a garbage disposal in a home on septic..

In the 30+ years my dad's had his house, he's never once had to pump out the septic. In the 7 years I lived in Pennsylvania, I never pumped mine either (did have it pumped when I bought the house, but not again while owning it). A well balanced system takes care of itself.

Yep, and that fraction of air flow is a big consideration in how the propane stockpile affects the end of the novel.

It was episode 2 where I saw Big Jim starting a generator, IT WAS A PROPANE POWERED GENERATOR.

That takes care of him, but I doubt there are many of them around. Most home generators are typically gas.

I remember what's her name telling Barby that Big Jim sold them a generator when they bought the house. If Big Jim owns a propane one himself I'm sure that's what he's selling to.

So I assume the home generators are mostly propane but worry about the hospital generators which are always diesel.

Interesting we have gone five episodes with no attempt to communicate with the outside world.

Especailly since it would be so easy to do, just setup a fiberoptic connection (light seems to pass through easy enough). Though it doesn't seem like anyone inside the dome seems to be able to concept how to set it up. Either way, signs should work well enough.

Still curious how water can seep through, but no sound.
