Fully agree with that post #5 Dee_Ann. I went from watching a whole lot of NatGeo and Science Channel to none. What is with programmers and idiotic reality shows? If it actually makes more money (by drawing more viewers) for a channel than education, I guess we should be appalled at our fellow Americans' mental condition.
At least NOVA and Nature are still on PBS...
It's a case of monkey see monkey do.I'm not sure who started it all, perhaps it was MTV,or TLC,but once it began all the others rushed to find the next biggest thing in reality. In a lot of cases exploiting people,to be fair though the folks that signed on for these shows opened themselves up to it.
Here is a classic example of the copy cat syndrome.
History had a show called moonshiners, there was a guy on there called Tickle,I reckon Tickle was such a cult hero on Moonshiners it warranted Discovery giving him his own show called....Tickle. Discovery has also went so far as to make a mockumentary shark week show, about a Megalodon attacking a fishing crew off the coast of South Africa. There were a lot of people that thought it was real.
What makes it worse imo,is scripted shows about real History, such as The Hatfield's and McCoy's get huge ratings, yet they come back with more of the stupidity.I don't know if these tv producers sit back and say to themselves, let's show just how dumb the tv viewers are,or it's all about the money,or both.Either way,it's a disturbing trend.
