WTB: Dishnetwork ViP211k receiver.

A capacitor burned out in one of my two tuners. I would like to buy a DEAD vip211k for parts so I can fix mine. It's extremely obvious which part is burnt out and I have a soldering iron so I can fix it if I can just get a replacement part. I figure buying a dead one will ensure I get the exact right part. I would like to fix it so that my recordings on my external EHD will play once it's fixed.

If no one has a dead one for sale I'll consider buying a working one if the price it right.

(I'm assuming that my recordings on my external EHD won't play on a replacement tuner?)

Anyway, I need a vip211k, working or not. Prefer dead for parts one if possible.

Why not just buy a replacement capacitor? Be alot cheaper than buying another receiver.

I would love to do that but I have no clue on earth where to buy one from. There is a radio shack in the area but it's idiot mouth breathing kids with greasy hair and pimples peddling cell phones and bling bling cases for them.
I do not know of any place that sells parts. I asked my dad and he just shrugged his shoulders and said "Well, 30 years ago you could have gone to radio shack.."

The part that burnt is VERY burnt so I don't think I'll be able to get a number off of it. That means I'm going to have to open my other tuner and take a picture of the undamaged part in it.
For now I've run a 50' HDMI cable down the stair well to the good tuner and I have one of those little wireless UFO remote repeaters. It's a bit crude but it works. I can watch TV at my desk which is where I spend 90% of my time.

Yeah. I understand, unfortunately the cell phone market is more profitable than electronics. I have a vip211 in excellent xondition . It's not being used at the moment but I have to decide if I want to part ways with it or not.

I dread digging the other tuner out of the bookcase downstairs, it's a real pain to get to it. But I have to so I can get pictures of the part that burned out.
Getting some numbers off of it is my starting point I suppose. Then finding a new one. I asked my friend's husband if he knew of a place that sells parts and he told me there is a computer store in the area that used to sell all the little parts that make up stuff but they got rid of it all and now they only sell cheap computer package deals, like the whole thing in a big box, display and all. He said no one sells parts anymore in a walk in store.

Usually if a disc cap blows something else in the circuit has went bad, so be mindful of that.
I thought if you got another receiver on the same account the Ex HDD would work with it. PM a DIRT member.
If you do decide to order a cap, osu1991 is right Newark is a great place. So is digikey.

Well the only way to find out what it to replace the obviously bad part, yes?
And if it works, great. If not, then I dunno. Time to replace the whole thing.

That's why I'm hoping to find a broken "for parts only" tuner that I can take parts out of to fix this one.
I'm quite good with a soldering iron. I have no doubt that I could take the bad part out and put a new one in.
I'm not afraid to try because it's dead anyway as it sits now.

Well then, get that part number from the other receiver, and let's see how this goes.

You could always buy a good one, and then you are covered both ways. Open it, find out what part you need, and buy a part and fix your old one. Then, put the new one back together, and sell it for what you paid for it.

If you can't fix the old one, you have the new one as a replacement. Win/win!

The working tuner is up in a bookcase and it's a genuine pain to get to. I never really considered taking it back out. I guess I'll get a ladder and give it a go in the wee hours when nothing is on.

I opened my other tuner that's still working fine and took a picture of the same part. There is a number printed on the main boards "C733".
The part that burned out is powder blue colored and the one in the other tuner is kind of a leather tan color.

The one that's burnt out is so badly burnt that it's impossible to read anything off of either side, it's burnt through and through.

I don't know what the numbers and symbols printed on the good one mean. It looks like it says R then under that it looks like 103 K and under that, I'm not sure what that is, It's either an L and a K joined together or a U and a K. Maybe. No clue.

You may find it isn't a capacitor, it could be a Metal-Oxide Varistor (MOV). They are used to protect circuits from over-voltage. Edit: I just read your post with the "C733" label and picture of the good unit from your other ViP211K. Sounds like a cap to me. The rating is probably on the other side. The side you photographed is probably manufacturing marks.

Another site I've used to find hard-to-find parts is www.mouser.com (more of a professional-level site)

That should be a .01uf disk ceramic cap. Very common value

She has the correct info to get a replacement cap. The 103k translates to a uf value like wa6rht indicates. Just make sure the replacement is rated for 50V.

I still need a working vip211k. I replaced that burnt part, I was EXTREMELY CAREFUL in every step not to break or damage anything else, I am 100% confident that I did everything right.
BUT, something else is toast because when I plugged it in it just makes a chirping noise. It doesn't power up, it just chirps. So it's fried and I need a replacement.

So I still need a good, working vip211k that's not encumbered with previous charges, that I can get activated without any issues.
