I will probably be leaving Direct TV in a couple of months as my current contract will be up and I doubt they will come close to matching Dish Network's $39.99 flex package. What receiver will they give me if I sign up for a Non DVR 1 TV setup? What Satellite Dish/LNB (Model #) would they use for this flex package with no locals?

Also does this receiver accept an RF remote and will it do both HDMI and composite at the same time? Currently I use multiple RF remotes on my Direct TV H25 receiver with HDMI to the primary TV and a modulator fed with composite cables and then going thru coax to the secondary TV's. It works great BTW. I want to create a similar set up on Dish if at all possible.

Another question...what is the diameter of the mast on the satellite dish that Dish Network currently uses. I have homemade mounts off the roof and the current Direct TV dish uses a 2" mount. I have several Prime Star mounts for Free to Air but they are all of course 2 3/8". In the old days I thought Dish Network had 1 1/2" diameter mounts. Thanks in advance for any info on this.

For hd non dvr service you'd most likely get a wally. I had a relative recently do that, they gave her the a 100.2 dish and your lnb would still look at the all the required sats in your area as some of the National hd would still be on those other sats.

You'll most likely either get a Wally or 211 receiver. Both are HD, non dvr, single tuner receivers. The Wally is newer and has more features. Both receivers have hdmi and composite outputs, so you'll still be able to mirror secondary tv's like you do now. There are several different compatible remotes for either receiver - being able to change channels at the secondary tv's will depend on the remote. The mast size is 1 1/2"

Honestly I would just say go with the hopper. You may not think you need the DVR but then you'll start using it and loving it

Of course the Hopper will cost you more per month for DVR fee. $39.95 fee makes me think you are interested in monthly costs.

Couldn't he just get the 211 and if he decides he wants DVR down the road just pay the one time $50 DVR upgrade fee and install an external hard drive?

I went over to Solid Signal. They say the Wally is compatible with a RF remote. In the FAQ for both the 211K & 211Z they say they won't go thru walls because they say each one comes with an IR remote. The Wally may/may not come with an IR remote but at least its compatible for RF. Are the 211K & 211Z compatible for RF even though they just come with IR remotes? Could I request a Wally over the 211's or do I just have to settle for what they give me? Can I buy my own receiver and save anything monthly in this instance? This setup requires RF capability as you probably already know.

I am not wanting to pay for DVR capability want the cheapest setup available...that is the whole purpose of this setup. Willing to pay some money up front so as to minimize monthly fees. Thanks.

Generally, they provide a receiver that will give you what you need, based on the # of TVs, DVR service, HD (not as applicable today obviously), and so on. You don't have much say in what you end up with. You can, of course, buy exactly the receiver you want. I'm not sure how installations are handled though. You don't save any monthly costs going this route though....

I did just go through their "builder" on their website and I indicated (1) TV, no DVR option, and it says they'll provide a "Wally". I even changed the credit (financial credit) to "Building credit" and it still indicates a "Wally". I think that in the past they would sometimes supply, at their discretion, an older model for people with lower credit ratings.

Regarding the dish and LNB, if Dish supplies and installs it, don't worry about that. I couldn't tell you, nor do I care, what Dish or LNB I have and I've had Dish since 2005.

Run away from the Wally. I've been thru 3 of them. Nothing but headaches. If it's not fighting with my Dongle it's screaming at my EHD. Did I say run far, far away?

You can go with dish rv like i did. You have to buy either a wally or 211z and a dish. The main advantage to this is it is a monthly prepaid service so you can change your programming whenever you want. I went with the flex pack with locals and added the national sports package for football season. Once the bowls are over it will be gone. If things get tight one month I can drop down to the smart pack and still have locals to watch. I have a wally with dvr activated. I have the hdmi going to my main tv and the composite to my bedroom tv.

Great info ! Can you tell if the remote to your Wally is RF?(I presume you have a Wally)

To the OP - none of the current single-tuner HD receivers do RF at all; this includes the 211k, 211z or Wally receivers. Nor can the receivers be retrofitted (with a "plug-in" dongle like you have on your H25) to make it receive any non-IR remote signals, for any DISH RF remotes. (there used to be a DISH-branded IR-to-RF converter, but they stopped making that years ago)

IMHO, you really should actually consider getting a 211k receiver...while it would be a refurbed box, it comes with a built-in OTA tuner, in case you would want to connect an OTA antenna into it. (the others require a separate dongle, which is also no longer made & is hard to find now) If you would decide to do the one-time $40 DVR activation & you would connect an antenna to it, you can actually record 2 different shows at once...one from satellite & one from the outside antenna, all at no extra charge!

The 211k also has component, S-video & optical audio outputs, as well as an RF 3/4 out, so you might NOT need the add-on modulator you're using now. The other receivers don't have all these connections on them.

I have a 722K from a garage sale. It looks like that will do RF. I presume I would have a $40 activation fee for the receiver. Can I do a 2nd one time $40 activation fee for the DVR or am I on the hook for a monthly DVR fee on this.

call dish and have them check the 722s serial number. its probably a leased unit and can never be activated......

Good to know. Its basically a boat anchor if I have to pay a monthly DVR fee. I should just let them supply me with a new DVR for the same money. I assume the new DVR receivers are capable of using RF remotes. I think I only gave $5 for the receiver...figured the hard drive inside would be worth that much.

I don't think satellite receivers are heavy enough to use for boat anchors.

Won't the new DVR receivers cost more per month than the 722?
