From what I understand you can still use the sets RVU feature and don't need a mini client if you want don't want to go that route.So basically, if I have 5 TV's, 1 HR54 & 4 H25..... I would replace them with the HS17, which would plug into my router, and a mini-client at each TV.
I also have 2 4k TV's, which sounds like you'd need a mini-client instead of using the RVU function? I could handle that, especially with more tuners available. We normally have, at most, 3 TV's running at one time.
As soon as this is available, I'm getting it. It will solve all the programs being recorded problem we have at the moment. Just need pricing.
If I had to guess yes but it probably wouldn't be recommended. I have tried wireless RVU at home and had mixed results. Wired is the way to go.

I think it an "It depends" answer. I've got three wireless clients in my home and all of them work just fine. Yes they are a bit slower then a wired client but it's nice to be able get rid of the coax I had running along baseboards in bedrooms by going wireless. If you can do wired easily then I agree that wired is the way to go but base on my experience it's not that bad.
That doesn't mean those that have the HR24's set up and want to keep them can't ...
Your not saying that everyone HAS to upgrade to the new set up are you ?
Campers and owners of Cottages and vacation homes are just screwed ?
They are not going to allow more than one Headless recvr per account I'm sure, just like the Genies now.
Plenty of people out there still have SD recvrs in the system ....
I'll keep my Genie and HR24's ...

I've waited up to a week to get someone out here when I can be home ... I can put all this stuff together and troubleshoot most of it, but when they say nthey HAVE to send someone, what ya gonna do ?
OK admittedly I'm late to the party on this thread and haven't read every post, but I did do a search and didn't see a definite answer. How do you use a normal "wired" Genie client with this thing? I'm probably missing the obvious, but I don't see it?
Is one thing we are forgetting about the server/client system is cost? Having one centralized headless home server and small client boxes would cost less to make then the H/HR series equipment? Plus would their be less hardware failures that way?
I'm not taking days off work to wait for someone that may or may not show up.Thats your own fault.
Another thing I don't like about it is if the server goes down, everything is down ... with the Genie and Hr24s, thats not the case ....
Someone will chime in that its just TV ... true, but TV is a big part of the lifestyle for most.

Yep. Single dish, on a single pole, with a single LNB, with a single power inserter....
Having recently converted from a HR44 / HR24 setup to a HR44 / C51 config, I wish I would have done it sooner. While the HR44 is quiet, its not silent. Having it out of the living room has been more enjoyable than I expected. If the HR44 fails, my plan is the same as with weather-related outages: streaming from TV anywhere apps on Apple TV / Fire TV.

Maybe you should switch providers if Directv is that bad with service calls.
And seriously how often did you have equipment failures in the past 10 years?
I can honestly say.
I've had 1 with Directv to replace HR23,
2 with Dish in 2010 only, VIp612 failure.
And One Internet issue that was Fixed same day.
Thats 10 years worth of actual issues and again All 3 companies were more than willing to do the service call in Under 48 hours.
So your point is Moot when it comes worrying about having a Single whole home server vs multiple pieces of equipment incase of Failure.
Its only TV.
And if you are that worried about it you would leave work early or go in late. Or just do it when you can because thats what people do.
But this is an extremely minor issue you speak of.
The fact that I would no longer be able to have one in the RV or the Cottage is more of an issue with me, if, they go to running everything off 1 server, with no other options ....
As I said earlier, I doubt that the All in one Server will be the only option available.
No one knows what they will allow yet.
Especially for RVs.
You make it seem like AT&T is going to pull all the HRs out of peoples houses and put in all HS17s.
Not going to happen.
You don't want one, don't upgrade.
Well, that's my point, you don't Have to upgrade, however there will come a time when you will want/need to replace a HR .... hopefully they will still give you the same model like they currently do and not Push you into upgrading.
