Nintendo Switch Thread

NONE of these reviews mean much considering the whole experience of eShop and Online use aren't available yet.
tbh, I couldn't care less about an eshop experience. As long as the games are good, don't care how I get them. As for online, the kids and I really don't factor that in when playing something. Online is nice, but it's never been a dealbreaker in a system.

Due to the size or the cartridges, and the age of their handheld market, not a bad precaution.

Though I'm still trying to figure out what possessed adults to want to taste it.

I actually watch the show that this came from every week. Jeff Gerstmann was just showing off the Switch, accessories, and games. He was showing how small the cartridge was and the reason he was shaking it like that was because he could hear something loose that was rattling around in that particular cartridge that didn't happen with other games.

One of the other members of the staff jokingly said "yeah, but how is the mouthfeel?" This was a joke from a previous episode where the staff tried protein paste made from crickets that a fan sent in from a different country. Jeff Gerstmann played along and popped the cartridge into his mouth and that's how the intentional bad taste of Switch games was discovered.

Review Embargo on Zelda: BOTW is up, so the reviews are now going live. Looks like Nintendo may have a winner on their hands. Honestly I haven't been big on Zelda for a while. The last game I played to completion was Wind Waker on the GC.

There's some reservation about the game because of these review scores, because perception of Zelda games seem to change drastically over time. When Wind Waker came out it was not very well received, but as time went on it got more love and even got a Wii U Re-release. Conversely, Skyward Sword was highly praised when it came out, mainly due to its 1:1 sword play capabilities with the Motion+ controller, but as time went on people started to just crap all over the game.

It also looks like most reviews are for the Switch, as opposed to the Wii U. I will be playing the Wii U version, since that's the system I currently have.

Managed to snag a couple units at the local Walmart's midnight release. Thankfully it's a smaller Walmart with several other larger ones in the county, so not much of a line, and they let me get 2.

Did set one up. The Day 1 patch took maybe a minute, not much too it I guess. The eshop maybe had 5 games in it.

Grabbed a charging grip while I was at Wally World.

The joy-cons are TINY, was surprised at how small they were.

Doing the upgrade and setting up the Nintendo acct on one of them was about all I could do, as amazon isn't delivering the games til later today.

Also, the first box they found of Zelda's, only had 6 of the Collector's Editions, none of the Standard Edition. After I had circled around to buy the second unit, there was a group of people waiting for them to finish the search for the regular edition's of Zelda. Was funny how they seemed to run out of Zelda before Switches.

There was maybe 3 Switch units left when I left, with no one else left in line. Hard to tell what that says about the launch, as this Walmart is out of the way, and most people would have gone to the 3 bigger ones in McDonough/Stockbridge that are less than 10 minutes away.

This made me laugh..

This made me laugh too, but for other reasons...

Capcom is actually charging $40 for Ultra Street Fighter 2. The reason I laugh is because it's basically a re-release of a game released in 2008 on 360 and PS3 that you can get for $15 and $10 respectively. The Ultra version adds 2 swap characters, a few balancing tweaks, and a useless first person mode. Oh, and unless you spend $70 for the pro controller, you're playing the game with Analog sticks, which is NOT ideal for fighting games. $20 could be justified, but $40 for this is insane. Maybe Capcom will come to their senses and price it more reasonably before release, because this will sell awful otherwise.

How is playing on the pro controller different than the joy-con's? The button layout on the pro is the same was with 2 joy-con's put together.

Pro controller has a digital pad, which allows for more precise movements. Playing a fighting game with just analog sticks is far from ideal.

I think the 4 face buttons on the left joycon are supposed to act as a d-pad when you are using both joycons as one controller. It's not really the same thing as a real d-pad since they are 4 separate buttons with space between them but I have heard that this is how it will be handled.

Edit: Now that I think about it, the PS4 d-pad is actually 4 separate buttons with space between them too. It isn't like the d-pad on the Xbox One controller or Switch pro controller. It just happens to be less space than the face buttons on the left Joycon.

According to Target's website availability checker the Switch is still in stock at my local Target as well as all 10 other Target stores within 50 miles of me.

I'm temped to go buy one just because I can (and I have that tax refund just sitting in my bank account). I'm not going to do it though. I have no business buying one right now when the only current game I want to play is Zelda and I just started Horzion Zero Dawn and have Mass Effect pre-ordered for later this month.

I'm sure that varies game by game, but I also can't fathom anyone using 4 separate buttons like that as their movement system in any game, let alone something like Street Fighter 2.

Yeah don't bother. I'm willing to bet the Switch will do REALLY well at Christmas this year once more games are available (including Mario Odyssey) and it finally has their online offerings done. I could see myself getting that for my kids for Christmas as their first system, similar to what my parents did nearly 30 years ago with the original Nintendo.

Damn.. I got a Nintendo 30 years ago........

..................anyways,

It looks like if I really wanted to I could go to some local Target branches to get one also, but I think that's to be expected. Not everyone was willing to wait until midnight to get it. Also, as far as Zelda goes, I'm sure there's probably some bugs that need patching out. An open world game as massive as that is BOUND to have some issues that got past QA.

No biggee, as said above the 4 buttons work as a D-pad, same as the Playstation does.

Seeing how the d-pad is digital, it's basically 4 buttons anyway.

I definitely wouldn't use those 4 buttons to control movement. I'm someone who never uses the d-pad for movement, even in fighting games and 2D platformers though. That might explain why I am so bad at fighting games.

The only time I use a d-pad is in games like Horizon Zero Dawn that assign items or skills to the d-pad instead of movement. The 4 separate buttons on the left joycon controller would be fine for that purpose.

I realize that some people really like a good d-pad, especially in fighting games and 2D stuff. Unfortunately those people will have to shell out $70 for that ridiculously expensive pro controller. For only $10 more than that you can, and I did, get a completely customized Xbox One controller.

For comparison, standard Xbox One controllers are going for $39.99 on Amazon right now. PS4 controllers are available for $45.

My use of the D-pad is pretty much the same.
