Charging different rates in different cities for the locals won't fly. What if 1 or 2 of the local stations were completely reasonable (Haha !! Hah hah hah !) ? They get penalized because of the bad apple(s).

Best solution: Charge per local channel !! Your local

Maybe they will want to end “Take one take all” and work on true reform after that then.
 
I'm calling and asking them to fulfill the order. We didn't get to watch football on Thanksgiving. It was inconvenient that I had to explain why we can't watch football to my 74 year old in laws.

I think that's a fair request, I don't blame you. At least you'll be set for the next contract dispute that involves your locals...we all know it's coming.

DISH Reaches Carriage Agreement with CBS Corporation



ENGLEWOOD, Colo.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- DISH Network L.L.C. has reached a multi-year carriage agreement with CBS Corporation for its owned and operated local stations, as well as CBS Sports Network, Pop, and Smithsonian Channel. The channels are currently being restored to DISH customers.

"We are grateful to our customers for their patience this holiday week as months of work has resulted in a deal that delivers CBS for years to come," said Warren Schlichting, DISH executive vice president of Marketing, Programming and Media Sales.

Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
Well, therefore I'm going to speculate that we'll be having part 3 of this discussion in 2020.

If I dropped Dish and didn't pay for any cable or satellite, I'd get CBS, NBC, and ABC for free. FOX cuts out too much and would be stuck coughing up cash for their programming.

But why should *I* pay for YOUR CBS? (Assuming your CBS negotiators are better than my CBS negotiators)?

Here in Chicago, I struggle to get ABC with my antenna. With CBS, NBC, and FOX, they are all over 90% on the signal strength. WGN, PBS, and the CW are all consistently in the mid to high 80's. But my ABC is in and out. Today when I had the Miami/Pitt game on, the signal was ok most of the time - low to mid 70's, but so much pixelation that lasts just for a second, and the occasional signal lost message. Believe me, if I could lock my ABC channel, I would have dropped those locals the day they came out. I would love to be able to pay $4-5 for just the ABC channel and not pay for any other locals.

DISH has been consistent in charging the same price across the board where legally possible for services I don't see them changing now.Thus you see no surcharge for RSN's as Directv does. (That may also be from getting better deals and not carrying some of the expensive ones) I also think it is like the RSN situation except they don't drop locals in areas where they cost too much. Rather then charge more in some areas they do subsidize the cost of locals based on all subscribers paying the same. With RSN's when NY went crazy with multiple expensive RSN's DISH was not willing to spread that cost, not willing to charge more for NY subscribers and everyone else who is in their market so they dropped them. (Note that in Eastern Ct I would have been affected by the NY RSN's if they raised that market cost as we are in both markets NYC and Boston) So charging more doesn't always just affect the area you might think it does. So Directv has a surcharge for the NYC RSN's but I would pay that too in Eastern Ct.

Further I am not clear DISH can market locals separately from each other now and we know Directv does not. Does any Cable company offer them separately? (online does not either that I can think of though they do not have must carry so may not have every network nor necessarily actual locals)
 
Part of me was hoping that when the stations were restored that POP, CBS SN, and Smithsonian would have ONLY been in HD, no SD. Just for the sake of seeing steps towards phasing out SD as station contracts came up for renewal.
Smithsonian already is that way, on Eastern Arc anyway.

It will be interesting to see how the price increases in Jan. are broken down. I assume that Dish did give in more than CBS. But then to cover the costs to CBS, will the cost of the locals package increase from $10?
It had better not increase because of this, in markets that do not have any stations owned by CBS.

It will increase, that's a given and until Dish starts charging different rates for the different local markets, everyone will be hit with an increase. Doesn't matter if your local CBS was corporate-owned or not.

Well in that case, the least (and I mean the very least) that Dish and CBS can do would be to give us POP in HD. Otherwise, we went through this hassle and an expected rate increase for what exactly?
 
This was the final straw. I'm done with Dish, after many years. I should have dropped them when they couldn't come to any terms with the NYC RSNs, and I've been without local sports now for years. The constant drop outs during NY weather, and paying through the nose, when compared to cable offerings in the area. The carriage disputes that go on for months. I've had it. I called customer service Wednesday, and all I got was "Please, please, we're working on it!" When I brought up lack of NYC Sports, specifically MSG Networks, I got the same line. Working on it for over seven years? Give me a break and don't insult my intelligence. My family is delighted to hear that we're dumping Dish.

I agree with the RSN charges as a separate line item.

If they didn’t do it that way, then they would have raised rates for everyone to average the cost out over their entire subscriber base.

The problem is that each market is unique, and this is one of the reason why the NY Regional sport networks remain off Dish.

If my market only has 1 sports network, why should my rates go up to off set the costs for customers in other markets who have regional sports networks.

The same goes for locals. Some markets get more locals than others but the price remains the same for everyone?

Too bad for customers who have choice or AT200 and above to have a choice when it comes to paying for sports.

Getting back to the NY DMA sports situation. It’s kind of sad that Dish pretty much decided to write off the entire DMA because they are too cheap to pay for sports programming.

I don’t care much for sports, but I do like to have the ability to watch my local baseball team when I want.

Sucks to be a Yankees fan and a Dish customer.

I'm with you on the MSG Network. When I Was home, in Buffalo, working a few months ago, it was tough to explain to people they won't get Sabres games...

Normally i would make a Yankee joke about sucks to be a Yankee fan but they did more with less this past season. If Joe was the manager of the Red Sox they would have gone further in the playoffs.
