The OFFICIAL DISH / HBO Thread

No, on HBO. By offering it, they make less.
Okay. Your post made it sound like it would not be worth it to keep the customer. I wonder how tight the profit margin on that $200 per month customer is, that the cost of adding HBO would cause Dish to only break even, or lose money on that customer.

Yeah if Charlie anticipated a mass exodus of Dish for DirecTV because of HBO, he wouldn't be saying no to them. Streaming and people getting it by other means, are main options. I also don't think it's going to be such a big thing because it's been quite a while since GOT has been on and yes it's the final season and not the first time after a long hiatus. But I doubt very much there will be any biblical moves to AT&T/DirecTv.

It’s all simple math. It’s just like the regional sports networks in New York.

You figure how many subscribers have the channel or package you plan on dropping.

In the case of HBO, how math customers will keep Dish and go to a streaming solution.

How many customers subscribe but don’t watch HBO, or really notice the channels are missing.

How many customers will cancel service because of no HBO.

From there you calculate the anticipated revenue loss vs the amount of savings not carrying HBO with the new minimum subscriber count and make the decision and move on.

I think by now it’s safe to say that any customers who where going to cancel already moved on to another provider or found a streaming solution.

The thing that would worry me at this point if I was a dish customer, how far as this going to go?

I am good friends with one or the former executive VP’s at Dish. He told me back in 2012 that in around 2018 or 2019, Dish will be able to turn a decent profit with their existing subscriber base, and said that they will change their business from a customer accusation mode, to a customer retention mode.

Meaning your no longer going to see the days where the company is spending millions on customer accusation and advertising. Rather, Dish is going to focus on keeping their existing customer base.

Charlie predicted when this happened, Dish will make more money then ever before.

This is happening right now. The promotions are not there like they used to be for new customers. Dish is cutting back on programming and it’s looking to the point where Dish will end up with 7 or 8 million satellite customers who pretty much will stick with dish no matter what.

This is confirmed...

But its an offer not to be advertised... Whoops! :)

Chat told me the offer was not true
"Regarding this, we apologize for the missinformation but Dish dont have promotion to HBO Now gift card because HBO is still not included in our programming. But as per checking here you wil have a 7 days free trial if you will subcribe to HBO Now streaming service."

So that is why Dish did away with the Audit Team. ;)

To be fair, Scott never did say who "they" are. In fact, in what he posted originally (before editing it) he said DIRECTV NOW gift cards, instead of HBO Now. When I read that, I thought that maybe ATT had a list of Dish subscribers who formerly had HBO, and they were the ones sending the gift cards, trying to get Dish subscribers to switch.

Ask for the cancellation department and try again

I posted DIRECTV Now by mistake and corrected it a few minutes later to HBO Now. When I posted it I had no details... however after I posted it my email box filled up with details and it was there I found that the offer was not to be advertised. But by then the post I made was already online for awhile.

Acquisition, I am sure, not accusation (but with Claude it's hard to tell :biggrin).

I figured out long ago that the fall of satellite would be a goldmine during it's very long death throes. I'm not sure what it is now, but the cost of acquisition has been very high. Around $700 per account. These were always a drag on the bottom line, but was made up in growth and stock value.

When they decide that growing the base is no longer viable and move into maintenance only, cost of acquisition becomes negligible and you just sit back and collect massive monthly fees that you amortized years ago in the acquisition phase.

At this point, it's more about programming, I'm seeing a lack of new shows on Showtime and Starz, do want to know how many times I've seen the movie "A Bad Moms Xmas" on the guide on Showtime since December it's on just about 2nd night during prime time, Starz has or had good shows and then the cancel them, Counterpoint & Black Sails were excellent show, But they get cancelled, whatever happened to having 20+ episodes a season on TV shows, now it's all like 10 shows a season and done. just not enough content, HBO is no better, Epix is almost the same with James Bonds and Star Trek movies. And i'm paying good money for these channels, I think if anything is going to kill Dish it's the networks, the content isn't there anymore, what happens with HBO after GOT is finished? At least Netflix has some good programming for now.

So, I'm thinking, just to be mean, I'm going to sub through iTunes. Apple will take their 30% off the top, leaving AT&T with $10.50 instead of $15.00! HA!

Or, maybe Scott can confirm, if we sub through Amazon from the link at the top of the page, does SatGuys get a cut?

My main reason for HBO is for Real Time and having it on demand where I can catch any of their movies anytime. If it wasn't for that, I would not bother.

I just noticed CH 301-->" HBO available through HBO NOW App" If ya subscribe for $15.00 a month (1st week free)!...LOL!

Why does DISH keep CH 301(HBO) & 311(Cinemax) in the guide?... It's a constant reminder of one of the reasons why I signed up in the 1st place?

I suppose to maintain the illusion that these channels may someday return. When these go away it will be absolute confirmation HBO/Cinemax is gone permanently.

Yeah, I saw the guide info on 301 also. Just reminds me that AT&T took the channels away to engage in an attempt at extortion...

I think Dish finally decided if someone wants HBO/Cinemax, let they stream the channels. It is easier than explaining the situation all of the time. That way if they want it, they can get it. Except for deals, the $15 a month is what Dish was selling HBO for anyway.

I've noticed a slowdown of answers on Dish's Facebook page .

My Wally. How could this happen?

Hard drive replacement on a Dish 722 k
