New Roku 2, Roku 3 Just Weeks Away

Looks like the new 3 is actually worse than the old one since they removed the ethernet port. The new commands are no big deal since I can add them to my universal as soon as they push out a new firmware that recognizes them. I'll post back when I have them. Hopefully this will result in a price drop in the old versions of the 2 and 3, so I can pick up more of those.

Bottom line, I'm keeping my hard wired 3 and will enjoy the new commands anyway.

The 2 is great. In fact any of the models are great IMO, and i had no interest in getting a 3 at all until I saw a good deal on them.

People had commented on the speed of them in comparison, but not knowing, I just did not see how it would be that much different.
It really is.

I find the stick and to a lesser extent my 2 (that are used in other locations) to be annoyingly laggy in comparison (only) after using the 3.

Not only that, but the 2 has an older Netflix interface that's missing Profiles, among other things, like no ethernet port. With 5 profiles on my account, that comes in handy. And the price difference isn't that much, if you shop for bargains, as you said. I managed to find a couple of 3's used for about the same price as a 1.

My 2XS has a wired Ethernet port. Fine for as little as I use it. But I don't do Netflix.

The model numbers are very confusing. There are already at least 4 Roku 2 models (the 2, 2 HD, 2 XD and 2 XS), and there is about to be a 5th with the same name as the current model 2, making matters even worse.

My kids and my parents watch a lot of Netflix on all their Rokus. But mine is mainly for HBO and SHO which are hard to find on many other streaming devices and suck in a browser.

This is the first time I do not feel a need to upgrade (and we have a lot of Rokus), the new Roku 3 does not seem that much different then what I have, I care nothing about voice commands.

According to Wiki and Roku, the new 3 also has an Ethernet port.

I sold my Roku on eBay a couple of months ago because the video was always jerky (like 10 frames per second) even though I have 18 Mbps fiber optic internet service.. Also it was annoying that there was no way to turn off the built-in WiFi which tended to interfere with other WiFi devices in my home.

If the new one has smooth video and no forced Wifi then it will be worth a try.
