Video Game Deals

It would have been nice if they would have named the source of their codes. I'm guessing the reason they didn't is because they were purchased from other regions where games sell for significantly less money. That's the only way it wouldn't cost them money to buy from another retailer and still sell at a $20 discount.

I would say that CDProjekt is getting some money for sales from GMG but not the amount they would typically get from Americans and people in the UK that GMG caters too. They probably just got their money when GMG bought the codes from Russia or South America or wherever they could find the best deal.

It sounds like GMG was being a little shady in this case but if it's true that CDProjekt isn't offering them codes when they have sold Witcher 1 and 2 for them in the past that's a little shady too. The idea behind GOG is great but it's not cool if they are cutting out other big PC retailers to push people there. They clearly haven't gone full EA/Origin mode though because Steam, uPlay, and Origin are all offering Witcher 3 pre-orders too.

Edit: I don't know if the $39.99 deal expired or if GMG pulled it because of this controversy but it's now listed at full price ($59.99). Even before the $39.99 they were offering a 10% pre-order discount to $53.99 just like Steam and every other major retailer still is. They are no longer offering that discount at all but I'm assuming you can still use the 23% store-wide voucher.

Edit 2: Turns out all of this is irrelevant to me. I just received a $50 Steam gift card as an early birthday present. My birthday is the day before the game launches and I was told this card is meant specifically for The Witcher 3 (it came from a big Witcher fan). With the 20% pre-order discount I get for having W1 and W2 in my Steam library this card will cover it. Now I just need to make sure I plow through the rest of Shadow of Mordor before the 19th.

Just received this email from Origin (doesn't help me): For a limited time only, you can save 33% off Dragon Age™: Inquisition. Plus, get an additional 25%* off with code: Origin25

They also have that all over their website. Might be worth it for other games to get an easy 25% off. Note that it does NOT work for Hardline or preorders in general.

yourbeliefs mentioned that he got a free copy of Witcher 3 with the purchase of his GTX 960. Apparently, if you buy the GTX 970 or 980 you get both The Witcher 3 and Arkham Knight. This one stings a little because these are two highly anticipated games for me and when I bought my GTX 970 a couple months ago they weren't packing anything in with the card.

So I actually feel a bit bad about this but I think Amazon is big enough to survive my shenanigans. IGN had an article posted telling people about the deal I quoted above. While skimming the comments I saw several people saying that Amazon, Newegg, and other retailers were honoring this promotion for people who bought a qualifying GPU in the last 30 days or so before the promotion was available if you contacted customer support.

I bought mine about 3 months ago so I'm well past this window. I contacted Amazon support and asked them about the promotion. The CSR said that she could see that I bought a qualifying card 3 months ago and that she had received other calls about this. Without hesitation she said I'm going to add the exact GPU you purchased to your Amazon shopping cart. Check out so we can send you the promotional code and we will refund your previous order of this GPU. I made sure they weren't going to make me return my old card and she assured me that I wouldn't have to and that they weren't going to actually ship me a new GPU. They just had to process it as a new order to apply the promotion.

Here's the thing. I already pre-ordered Arkham Knight a couple months ago and like I said a few posts up I bought The Witcher 3 with a Steam gift card I received as a birthday present earlier today. I didn't need either of these codes but I figured I would find a use for them on the off chance that Amazon would honor a promotion that started 3 months after my purchase. Maybe I can sell them for $25 each or something like that and put it towards the season passes.

Here's the kicker. The price for this GPU is actually $17 cheaper today than it was when I bought it 3 months ago. The refund email said I would be credited the full amount I paid back in February and the purchase confirmation email had today's purchase price. So, not only did I get 2 free game codes, I also got paid $17 to do it. Like I said, I actually feel a little bad about this and I never thought they would do anything for me when I made the call to support.

Edit: in another strange turn of events I just got a shipping confirmation email with a working tracking number for UPS. I was told they weren't going to actually ship me anything and that they just had to run it as a new order to process the promotion. I immediately called customer service because this clearly wasn't supposed to happen.

The CSR pulled up my report but didn't understand what a GPU is and kept trying to get me to contact EVGA, the manufacturer of my GPU, to process a warranty claim for my missing parts (he was talking about the free games). I tried to explain it to him several times but he just didn't get it.

I also explained that the refund from my February purchase was already showing on my credit card activity report even though the original GPU is still in my possession and I am not sending it back. The CSR from earlier today promised me I would not have to do anything with my original card. He said he could see that in his notes and agreed that I would not have to send the original back.

I told him to cancel the shipment on the new card and he said that it was already taken by UPS and he cannot do that. I tried explaining to him several times that I could see the activity on my card already. The February purchase has been refunded and today's purchase, which is slightly less expensive, is already there too. I told him that basically Amazon has now sent me two $350 GPUs even though I only paid for one of them. According to him the original card has already been processed as a refund and basically no longer exists as far as they are concerned even though it's still in my possession.

Still trying to get this whole concept through his head I asked him what I'm supposed to do when this new GTX 970 arrives on Monday. He told me I could send it back for a refund if I'm not happy with it. I explained to him that if I did that they would now be giving me two full refunds when I only actually paid once. Basically I would lose the promos that I didn't actually care that much about but get the $350 GPU I have been using for the last 3 months for free.

This entire process has been insane. I'm giving up for the night. I'll try again tomorrow and hopefully get someone who actually understands what's going on. I already felt a little bad getting the $17 price difference in addition to the free codes (I don't feel bad about the game code promotion part). Taking a free 970 feels way to far over the line. Maybe the person I talked to before set it up so they aren't actually shipping anything but UPS seems to think they are possession of a 3.2 pound box. Guess we'll see Monday if I can't get it straightened out before then.

So.... you'll have a dual 970 setup?

That's actually a possibility since Amazon doesn't seem to want it back. I guess we'll see on Monday if something actually shows up at my house. That seems like some extreme overkill for gaming at 1080p/60 but I'm sure that will change going forward. Somehow that feels a little less shady than tryIng to sell it though.

It's PC Gaming. There's no such thing as overkill. Besides, it's not like you're going to stay at 1080p forever. I WOULD say though that you may need to check your power source. It may not be able to handle two 970s. I know mine just about manages with the hardware I have in it and it's a 700W. On a side note, I just realized that my system (aside from the new GPU) is nearly 3 1/2 years old. We'll see how much longer that 2500k can get by. I do know that when I do my next upgrade I'm starting from scratch and ditching my case and everything and just starting anew (except for my storage/memory of course). Hopefully that won't be anytime in the immediate future.

Yeah, If a GPU actually shows up Monday I'm going to sit on it awhile and make sure the card activity stays the way it is showing up now. Assuming no other craziness happens with Amazon I will put it in SLI with the identical 970 I already have in my PC.

To do that I will have to make a couple upgrades. Like you said, my current 600W power supply probably isn't strong enough to handle two 970s and my overclocked CPU. On top of that the motherboard I bought supports AMDs dual graphics technology (crossfire), but it doesn't look like it supports Nvidia's SLI so that will likely have to be replaced too. I originally built this PC for an AMD GPU and I never had any intention of running two GPUs.

Still, a new motherboard and power supply is relatively cheap considering the huge upgrade it would give me. I'm also not going to really believe that they actually sent me a second GPU until whatever package UPS has actually shows up at my door. There is definitely something on the way though. My tracking info already shows stops in several cities.

I know it's a supply/demand thing, but I got a kick out of Unity only being $13 used (PS4), when LEGO Batman 3, that came out at the same time, is $35 used.

Yeah, they end up buying a ton of copies for games like Unity that will have a big rental demand on day one. Then once the demand dies down a few months later they have about 10 times more copies than they need so the used prices are better. Games like Lego Batman have a way more level customer demand curve. They buy less rental copies at launch so they have way less to sell when they are trying to free up inventory space down the line.

So yeah, you're probably exactly right on the reason Unity is so much cheaper than Lego Batman.
