Still 4.41 here as well, and it doesn't look like the 622 called in/downloaded last night, it's set for 3AM but the date listed still shows 8/16, it should show 8/17 if I'm not mistaken.

I've read that Hitachi's Feature Tools works with many brands of drives other than just Hitachi drives although I haven't tried it myself. Apparently Seagate's application is specific for Seagate drives only. Just something worth noting for those with other brands of drives.

Yes, that is correct, the drive becomes dedicated to the Dish DVR, it cannot be used for anything else.

That's what I was saying, maybe not very clearly. :D The drives in these external USB housings are typical not set for DVR-24/7 use.

You have a point about periodic access, but in a AV-DVR environment these drives are expected to run 24/7, that's why many models feature reduced noise, reduced power use, etc. It makes sense that an external drive may already have the acoustic management set to low noise, but the spin down...

You might want to check the external drive bug thread before getting too far into transferring a lot of content to the drive. It seems many of these external USB models use the spin-down feature which seems to be causing problems. IOW, it might be a good idea to adjust the FW on the drive...

No, HDD tools like Seagate's SeaTools and Hitachi's Feature Tool work with the firmware in the HDD itself. Once the firmware is adjusted/set to how you want, it will work independently of whatever file system is put on the drive.

That's, well, stupid..why did they do that? The best implementation I've seen so far is with the TiVo Series 3, the external drive is transparent, you just have much more space than with the single internal drive while using all the same menu for recording listings, playback, etc.

It has to be faster than that doesn't it to be able to play back from the external drive, no? I do agree, eSATA is the way to go though.
