5-07-08 HD Rumors.

Scott, while you're at it... any word on whether or not us poor second-class "HD Essentials" subs will be able to see Olympics coverage on Universal HD? Not that I will watch much Olympics coverage, but would like to know nonetheless.

I doubt that they'll turn on Uni-HD for the Essentials customers. When they had it for the last Winter Olympics it wasn't officially part of any HD package, yet, so it they put it in MPEG-2 for everyone.

I'd like them to prove me wrong, but I'm not holding my breath for them to light Uni-HD for everyone this Summer.

Rumors For 5-07-08 By 4pm EST. ESPN News HD Toon Disney HD at the least could be one more but my sources say at least these will be added. as far as national HD goes. Not including the HD Locals that will be added.

Is this still a go for tomorrow?

I have heard of nothing about Comcast Sportsnet Bay Area.

This makes me sad. SD PQ is atrocious on CSNBA a lot of the time. I guess it just means I'll be watching a lot less baseball on TV this summer. I really hope this is fixed by the start of hockey and basketball in the fall. Seeing commercials telling us to watch in HD on D* and Comcast during telecasts is aggravating.

"Seeing commercials telling us to watch in HD on D* and Comcast during telecasts is aggravating."

I think that's the worst part, that D* and Comcast both have this channel in HD and we suckers with E* have to watch the crappy picture in SD.

The HD feeds will be Local NBC & Telemundo Affiliates, USA-HD & Universal-HD
The SD feeds will be MSNBC and CNBC.

Bravo is no longer part of the Olympics package. NBC will air more hours than previously planned. All content will be recorded in 1080i.

What is the source of this information ??

I can't find any evidence of more than one Telemundo station that can broadcast in HD (channel 52 in Los Angeles seem to be the only one).

Perhaps you meant to put the "Telemundo Affiliates" on the SD line ?

The NBC Summer Olympic Games in Beijing will be produced totally in high definition, but it is still unclear exactly how many hours of HD coverage will be broadcast in the United States. NBC has already announced that they will shoot a record 3,600 hours during the Olympics, which run from August 8 to 24, 2008. High definition Olympics broadcasts will be available on NBC HD, USA HD and Universal HD, but additional programming will be carried in SD on MSNBC and CNBC.

I will be please with ESPN News Hd....

Chances are that you won't see any HD video of the Olympics on ESPNews (or any non-NBCU station, for that matter) unless it is days after the event has aired (at which point it will be old news b/c of the time difference). NBC doesn't let anyone have video, much less HD video, for highlights so expect to see lots of still photographs and results screens. (Though last Olympics I seem to remember ESPN only reported on them after all the baseball highlights). There may be some at NBColympics.com, but expect the on-air highlights to be few and far between. This, from an article written shortly after the last Winter Olympics:

"We were limited by highlights restrictions, as well as not having any camera access to the Olympic Village, venues, or most press conferences," explained Vince Doria, senior vice president and director of news for ESPN. "We understand the scope of the event and would like to have done more."
