Amazon Deal w/HBO

HBO has been looking for a way to market it's programming without angering (and rightly so) the carriers. This is probably one way.

Yes, Amazon is working hard and successfully to narrow the gap between them and Netflix, especially for TV shows. When Bezos has his mind set on something.....

Take that, Netflix. Beginning on May 21 the multi-year agreement will enable Amazon Prime subscribers to stream series including The Sopranos, Six Feet Under, The Wire, and later — about three years after episodes initially air — Girls, The Newsroom and Veep. In addition, by year end Amazon will offer HBO GO on its new Fire TV platform.

This will be good for Amazon but I'm surprised HBO is doing this. They have basically been the only channel to keep all their streaming to themselves.

I think the quality of Netflix's original programming is starting to worry HBO, so they're willing to make a deal like this with Netflix's main competitor. Notice that Game Of Thrones is not going to be available and you need to wait 3 seasons instead of the more normal 1 season to catch a current series. So they're still protecting HBOGO and their pay-tv partners.

I think this deal has as much to do with HBO not wanting to work out a deal with Netflix as it does with Amazon pushing to get HBO content.

Well, there was a hint that something big was coming for Amazon. Nice. Best part: "At no additional cost to their Prime Membership."

Might havta check out Rome. And I've seen at least some Six Feet Under. Was that available outside HBO?

W00t! This is pretty cool! Look forward to being able to maybe finally watch The Sopranos among some of the other HBO stuff I've missed.

Another thing that just occurred to me is that Netflix will soon become the "premium channel" for Disney content. I'm sure this influenced HBO's decision on doing this.

For anyone that hasn't seen it, I strongly recommend The Wire. At its best, its one of the best TV things ever. At its worst, its still darn good tv.

Homicide Life on the Streets was the best thing I've seen, but I've heard The Wire, another Baltimore centered show, is pretty darn good.

David Simon was a former crime reporter in B'more and wrote a book called Homicide:A Year on the Killing Streets. Some of the characters and events in the book he used in Homicide:Life on the Street and others in The Wire. If you liked Homicide, you really, really need to watch The Wire.

This is good news. Sopranos and The Wire coming up. I think this really separates Netflix from Amazon.

The wire is one good series. HBO did a nice job in upconverting it. I may watch it again on HBO Go
