After some research, I made an attempt to get some info together to aid in selecting antennas for HD reception. Researching indoor antennas next.

Antenna Classification (from antenna-web.org)

SM – Small Multidirectional - Yellow
MM – Medium Multidirectional - Yellow, Green
LM – Large Multidirectional - Yellow, Green, LT GREEN
SD – Small directional - Yellow, Green, LT GREEN
MD –Medium directional - Yellow, Green, Lt Green, Red, BLUE
LD – Large Directional - Yellow, Green, Lt Green, Red, BLUE, VIOLET, PINK

General guidelines in miles (from antenna-web.org - mileage to towers)

Indoor 0-15 miles
Attic 0-25 miles (may need to go up in size to offset room attenuation)
Short range 0-15
Medium Range 15-55 miles
Long Range 50-70+ miles

Colors listed in CAPS– Recommended with an amplifier and Roof Top Installation.

Adding a pre-amp where recommended will greatly improve your reception and your ability to hook up more than 1 TV and with long cable runs.
