It is a fake. How can you tell? Apple will never have user replacement batteries. The fourth generation IPHONE I saw had a bigger screen. This is a Chinese knockoff that can be bought today.

The person that went to that bar with the new iPhone is probably in an unemployment office now.

I already want it just for the flash and better camera. If it really has noise cancelling it would be even better.

Hehe. ..
Apple officially asked for the phone back admitting it is theirs...

Good play on Gizmodo's part! Go there for more...

FunkyBoss- Yes, that thought crossed my mind too. :)

There's nothing new in the iphone that other phones don't already have but the iphone has a unique Apple Cult Appeal. Apple iphone loyalists are moving to Nexus One in large numbers.

I really like Gizmodo coverage of the whole incident, including the latest, "access journalism"
Apple Didn't Leak the iPhone—and Why That Matters - lost iPhone - Gizmodo

As it turns out, they are blacklisted from the Apple-friendly bunch of journalists for a while, since they touched upon Jobs' health issues.
This most likely made this whole thing possible to start with. W. Mossberg would not have written about it.

I like the exposure this got so Apple's antics are covered not only in the geek media but also by the likes of New Your Times.

The remaining questions: Will they postpone the release and redesign it? Do they have a Plan B ready?

I do not think so. The phone was bricked before Gizmodo got their hands on it. So, it could have a lot more hidden features that no one knows about yet. All they really know is that there are 2 cameras, and a higher resolution screen. Everything else is still pretty much a mystery.

...and also the battery is huge with no DIY replacement option

I guess the higher res screen needs some juice...

Too bad the questions about A4 and RAM amount weren't answered.

Being a prototype Apple probably had no markings on the chips. Without an OS working on it, there is probably no way to tell what chip is in there. Probably every chip in there had all information removed/covered up.
