5g is still being tested and developed..4g was "supposed" to do 100 meg..5g just doesn't exist yet
It decided that the peak download speeds for 4G should be 100Mbit/s for high mobility devices, such as when you're using a phone in a car or on a train.
When you're stationary, (low-mobility local wireless access) it decided that 4G should be able to deliver speeds up to around 1Gbit/s.
If true 4G is supposed to offer us download speeds of up to 1Gbit/s, then why are we getting 100x less in the UK, at around 10-12Mbit/s in real-world speeds?

Highest 4G LTE speed I've ever seen is 127mbps. It was in Tulsa near the Hard Rock Casino on TMobile. Usually my peak speeds on Verizon are 45-80 mbps.
I think part of the problem is that the cellular data speed is contingent upon the copper or fiber backhaul speed feeding the tower. If your local telco can't provide the tower with a fast speed, then you're limited

Best I ever get anymore on LTE around the metro area is around 10-12
Edit I think those are new towers around the Hard Rock as part of all the infrastructure upgrades in the area

A few years ago at work when we moved our phone service from PRI over POTS with Windstream to PRI over fiber with Time Warner, I was geeking out with the tech for a while. He was a lead tech who was out in the field that day and we got talking about cellular backhaul. He told me the vast majority of cell phone towers in the area, regardless of carrier were fed with a fiber backhaul from TWC provisioned at 1 Gbps symmetrical. I was shocked it was so low. I think they sell fiber in 1 Gb, 5Gb and 10 Gb packages. I was expecting him to say 5 Gbps. He made a point to say they work with Sprint more then the other three carriers, and Verizon the least as Verizon has a lot of their own fiber in the northeast. Sprint is my provider, not sure if they did something with bandwidth management, or they increased their backhaul from TWC, or maybe it's just because people are dropping them, but when they first upgraded area towers to LTE, I would max out at roughly 30 Down x 10 Up when within eyesight of one of their towers. Now I max out at roughly double that at 60 Down x 20 up, though I very rarely hit 20, it's more like 17-18.

If memory serves. Maybe not quite that long. But I haven't seen speeds like that anywhere since

My daughter left my T-Mobile family plan for Verizon a few years ago, ostensibly to get better coverage. On many phone conversations, her voice was choppy. I felt like counter-programming a Verizon commercial that said, "Yeah, I can hear you know, I just can't understand you!"
CDMA is good when it works. Pretty soon Verizon is retiring CDMA (end of 2019) and all calls will be VoLTE, so hopefully call quality will be permanately improved!
