I'm going with No as well, mainly because when you first hook up the external, it reformat .... then when you hook up to another, it will also reformat erasing your shows ....

Its to bad it works that way because 8t would be nice to be able to do that.

External hard drives are married to the receiver/dvr. You can use them on another one, but as Jimbo noted, they will reformat so the recordings are lost.

Actually hard drives are not reformatted (when they already have) when switching DVRs. The shows will be visible but unplayable. Only OTA content will be playable.

You would think that the encryption that is on one DVR would be the same so that you can move the EHD around.

the method used to encrypt it IS the same. but im sure theres some numbers on the access card and receiver that make up the encryption key, making it impossible to move the EHDD to a new one. the metadata isnt encrypted or OTA stuff i guess.

I'm thinking the OTA stuff wouldn't be as it's not going thru the Sat datastream.
