FCC pushing Dish for details of their cellular buildout.

I've been saying for the last few years that Charlie is going to have to sell the spectrum before he loses it all. He has made no attempts to build anything so far. In 19 months if he doesn't satisfy the build out parameters in 176 markets he lose all the spectrum back to the government and loses the entire 20 billion he has spent so far. Don't see him building anything in little over a year and a half away.

Can't even sell it and make the deadline. Takes time, workers and equipment in many locations , no matter who owns the license.

I think he is toast.

It’s not over to the fat lady sings . Give Charlie some credit he isn’t dumb. We can all speculate about his end game. There is a new Verizon sheriff coming to town ready to pull the trigger on 5g and the future of Verizon. Dish has a boat load of spectrum. I don’t believe they will start a new network but will sell out . Could be Amazon, Verizon. Att for the spectrum. If T-Mobile is blocked could be sprint or T-Mobile or both combined. I don’t hear any singing yet . Maybe a little banjo music.

Its already been posted that Charlie has already negotiated tower space. He just needs equipment and a plan.

He’s waiting on something.

I think the end game was to buy Sprint or T-mobile.

However a really serious issue is the fact that Charlie controls over 50% of the Dish stock and nobody can get along with him.

Here is what is going to happen. As the 2020 deadline approaches, the value of the spectrum will go down to the point where whatever offer Charlie gets for it will be so insulting that Charlie will refuse to sell.

So that puts Dish back into the satellite Tv business.

If Dish doesn’t take advantage of this wireless spectrum, I say the company is out of business by 2024.

Yes, I said it. Dish network going out of business. The fact they have not been able to transition themselves to a broadband company will seal their fate.

The cat is out of the bag that they are replacing valuable satellite subscribers with worthless sling Tv customers. As broadband delivered television becomes more and more popular, all Charlie will have is the rule markets which eventually will have reliable broadband access.

Let’s say Charlie does succeed in building a wireless network. Who is going to sell the phones?

They had a great opportunity with blockbuster to use the stores as a launching point for cell phones, but that deal was too early and all the stores except 1 are closed down.

Then we got the local dealers. AT&T can’t even get the dealers selling their phones. There is a big push, but it’s not taken off yet. Also many Dish retailers also sell AT&T Directv.

Do you think the retailers are going to sell Dish network phones or AT&T.

I think Dish Networks only hope is Verizon or Charter comes in and buys them out and does to them what has happened to AT&T.

And I don’t care if Charlie has negotiated tower space. That’s just another ruse. Knowing him he is probably paying pennies on the dollar to reserve the space until he goes something.

Low orbit sats for Internet?! Maybe in exotic locations in the middle of an ocean... but over terrestrial areas? Hundreds or thousands of sats cost money and time and require special materials to be made. Is it even reasonable to think the production of these things is reasonable and not be cost prohibitive?
And yet, Charlie is a billionaire.

And none of us are.
Speak for yourself, I'm just a few meaningless zero's away from being a billionaire.

Ergen seems to be against the wall on this, but no one here really knows where he stands on it and things could be much better along at this point.

You guys are acting like it's still 1997. For $200 I can buy a Chromebook that beats the living piss out of the $1500 PC (with 19 gig hard drive) I bought back then. I doubt the satellites costs more than a hundred bucks apiece and the big expense will be getting them up in the air. Well one of the firms wanting to build the network is SpaceX. They've got their owns rockets, ya know?

I remember selling the very first DVD machines and inside there would be a cheap, colored construction paper coupon to join a new mail service called Netflix since finding any DVDs locally was a tough go. But the interesting thing is these guys (Netflix), even back then, said that at some point in the future, they would send you the movie digitally instead of mailing a disc. I laughed and laughed and laughed.....

The tower space is interesting. Charlie has towers and spectrum. He needs equipment. He has the peanut butter and jelly. We all know who has the Bread . I bet Charlie is a prime member and get same day delivery.

There’s some pretty smart money betting on LEO and MEO satellites for Internet. I’m sure they’ve done the math and believe there’s money to be made, even if WE don’t see how.

Polar orbiting satellites will travel over every bit of the earth below. Equatorial orbits can cover most of the earth. There are no LEO or MEO orbits that could be placed over ocean areas only. For that, you’d need geosynchronous or geostationary.

If Charlie’s plan is truly 5G, he still has a ways to wait. Commercial 5G antenna systems are just now starting to become available. Both “tower” and “home end” antenna systems are needed. Even if the tower end is atop a telephone pole.

Wealth he has built up over the years with now dated technology. The future is wireless and internet , two areas Charlie hasn't got into fully. Even Billionaires lose money. Look at Mark Zuckerburg the other day, he lost $150 billion dollars in wealth in one day.

If an alien spacecraft steals a few satellites, the stock goes to ZERO, Charlie is only worth a several million.

I'd guess at a minimum , he will default on the early buildouts.

He is doing what the FCC calls " spectrum parking".

A speculator buys up licences , betting that they can find partners or sell capacity before the drop dead date.

The FCC is well experienced concerning this practice and their practice is to come down with a hammer, invalidate the licences, recover the spectrum, declare the cash payments non refundable and , if serious enough , blacklist the licencee for future licences.

They might give someone a few months extra if they have an accident or some other act of God, affecting time frame but this one will not fit those conditions.

And new partners mean nothing. They want systems running and delaying shell games (partners) will not be accepted.
