Call me crazy, but I've noticed a few times recently where DirecTV has somehow managed to inject local ads into national network commercial breaks, something I've only seen from regional cable operators. Anyone know how this works?

You're crazy! :)
They have been inserting local ads for a while. Directv puts them on the hard drive of your dvr.

I've seen that too, on channels such as NBC Sports (220) etc. My guess is it's probably very easy to insert a local ad using your local channel's spot beam on a cue from the network.

I actually like it, since I hate seeing a juicy ad for a meal and realize it's at a chain that's 2000 miles away :)

I've noticed the same thing since about this time last year. I'm guessing the ads are inserted at the local-in-local origination points (there's one in each market served by the DBS companies, usually at a local station). I'm in Los Angeles, so far I've only see local/regional ads for a car dealership from one of the suburbs, and for Carl's Jr.

Actually they are inserted by your DVR. DirecTV downloads them to your DVR, and then your DVR inserts them, I assume by zip code. The local-in-local origination points (called Local Receive Facilities) only uplink the signals through one of DirecTV's main facilities to the satellite, they don't add anything.

That's interesting...thanks for the clarification.

And what sucks about these local commercials is that they are most in SD, sound is mono, and what sucks most is that volume is two times louder than regular programming.

I was going to :welcome you to Satelliteguys MozartMan since this is your first post, but you have been a member for over seven years! :)

I thought they did. But I still get nearly blown out of the room by some of those ads.
