Looks like Netflix is online rental to have for SD/HD

Sorry if I'm being dense here... but when you say "it will select the format automatically," does that mean that if a movie is on your list and they only have it available on SD, that's what they'll send you? Or can you leave SD out altogether?
If it's not available in HD they'll send you the SD. If you don't want SD, don't add it to the queue.

You choose SD, and then either of the 2(or both) HD formats. You then go in and order your format preference, so when you add a movie it goes down the line and gives if it to you in that order.

I have
BD
HDDVD
DVD

If its only on HDDVD, it automatically gives you an HDDVD. If its only on DVD it skips over both. Very handy and if you have both HD formats enabled, you can easily change from one to another for a particular movie in your queue.
 
Price same for either format?

Sorry to jump in but this thread caught my eye :). I had my wife go to netflix website the other day and try to determine if the price was the same for their monthly plans whether you put SD DVDs in your requests or HDDVDs/BDs. She said she could not find any info on their website..
Is the monthly price the same no matter what you order?

I believe it's the same price, like BB was. No premium price for the HD formats.

Btw, I just signed back up with netflix, I had a 1 month window to ride my BB sub at the same price, but I cancelled out of principle

Funny story- my dad is a netflix kinda guy- goes for 6 months and sees everything he wants to- cancels. Signs back up 6 months later and the cycle continues over and over.
Back a few months ago my step-brother gave him a 2 month free deal with BB. At first he thought this was a good deal because he could go to the store and pickup new releases. Then he found out he had to have them back in a couple days. He was not happy about this.
Next he said that over the two months he had received at least 5 movies that would not play because of scratches, etc.. One he got had a big chunk out of the edge of the disc! He went down to BB store and told them that they had the worst service he has ever seen and in the 4-5 years he had been with Netflix he hadn't had that many bad movies!
The guy in the store told him that BB really doesn't run the online program and that it is outsourced to a 3rd party. My dad (who is 80) told him that he didn't see them being around long;).

I think you answered part of it, which is that I have to pick DVD as one of the options, but here's what I'm getting after. If I have Casino Royale (as an example) in my queue and have my preferences set as BD, HD-DVD, then DVD, will they wait until they get the BD copy and send me that, or would they possibly send me the DVD version?

I'd be ok with it if they're only sending DVD versions for movies without an HD alternative, but I would be none too happy if I got something in SD that didn't have to be...

When you select a movie it will put in your queue that movie including your desired format. They won't send you a SD movie if it's in HD (unless you release the SD version in the queue. In your queue you can change the format and it doesn't effect your HD preference). They will wait to send it if you want it in HD.

What ever your queue shows is the format they'll send you, there is a drop down next to each movie in your queue that you can change formats if available in another format. Just sign up for the free 2 week trail.

The email seems to be farying, wonder why. Are they charging more for heavy users? Is your 3 out the "unlimited"?


Yes, my subscription is 3 out unlimited. I signed up in January 07. I think I average around 3 movies (mail in) + 3 in-store exchange a week when I first got it. After a few months, it slow down a little. Right now I only doing maybe 1 or 2 movies a week.

I really love the in store exchange option though since I have about 5 blockbusters on my daily commute route.

I plan on it... going to wait until after I get through all of the movies I've bought lately and/or am getting for Christmas first, though... 2 weeks would do me absolutely no good right at the moment.
 
Does any have a review of the "watch instantly" option in Netflix. Bandwidth, PQ, SQ, titles, etc?
 
I've watched several episodes of "30 Rock" and one episode of "Heroes" through the watch instantly feature on Netflix, and I was quite impressed with the PQ and audio.

I am using a newer 20" Dell widescreen monitor, a decent Creative 2.1 sound system, and cable high-speed internet. I don't know how that would translate to a HTS with a large screen monitor, but with my set up, I would say PQ is comparable to 480p. Of course "30 Rock" is a newer show filmed for HD broadcast, I'm sure older TV shows will suffer a bit.

Selection is paltry compared to Netflix's vast DVD repertoire. But there are a number of decent new releases, which I'd rather watch on disk on my HTS. I think the advantage here is for travelers or people with a lot of downtime at work. For home watching, go with disks.
 
On a different note, I wanted to ask everyone if you've noticed longer wait times on Netflix for new releases on BD or HD DVD than you did for SD DVD. It seems that Netflix has greatly improved their availability of newer SD DVD titles, but since going BD two months ago, I'm still seeing a lot of "Very Long Waits" on BD titles released 6 weeks ago.
 
I can tell you this. The movies at the top of my queue are roughly 9 weeks behind and I dont have any issues, so I can be of no help. I was out of town for 2 mo's and it gave me a nice little cushion.
