A Spokane, Wash., media company is buying seven Montana TV stations, including KULR-TV in Billings.
On Tuesday, a new subsidiary of Cowles Co., called Cowles Montana Media Co., said it was buying KULR-TV, the Billings NBC affiliate, and TV stations in six other Montana cities. The seller is Max Media of Montana, a subsidiary of Max Media LLC of Virginia Beach, Va., a company formed in 2001.
Patricia McRae, Cowles’ president of broadcast, said her company has been trying to buy television stations in Montana for about three years and her company is here to stay.
“We are buying to operate. We don’t plan to take these and churn them. We want to become part of the communities,” she said.
In addition to KULR (Straight 8) in Billings, Cowles is buying KTMF-TV (ABC/FOX) in Missoula; KTMF-LD (ABC/FOX) in Kalispell: KWYB-TV (ABC/FOX) in Butte; KWYB-LD (ABC/FOX) in Bozeman; KFBB-TV (ABC/FOX) in Great Falls; and KHBB-TV (ABC/FOX) in Helena, as well as their digital channels. The purchase price was not disclosed.
