New Channels

All I will say, cancel Charter, just get rid of them, both Dish and Direct TV is better, Charted doesn't add new channels unless they have to. Our area just got the ABC local after 2 years of waiting and got MTV HD, things I already am getting via satellite, the PQ on Charter is horrible here....lots of blocking and tiling on the HD channels, the Moxi boxes are ok, but in this area all you will get is a Scientific Atlanta 8xxx, and its slow and horrible to use...Charter is rude and just not a good company, I am very satisfied with Dish, will never ever ever go back to Charter (if I have to pay for it!)--the only thing I use Charter for is highspeed internet...

So far, I can say that customer service drastically needs to improve. But I had CS issues with D* and E* as well. As far as PQ goes, yes, the analog channels are crap. Some are better than others. The locals seem to be the worst. But the digital channels are MUCH better than D*. I watched an MLB EI game last night and I couldn't believe how good the PQ was compared to D* EI games. It looked very very close to DVD quality. D* always had macroblocking and their colors were not as deep. So as far as I can say in my area, the PQ (on digital channels) are a LOT better than D*. And so far the MOXI has not failed me in any way. It's not sluggish and I have not had to reset it (being with D*'s R15, I'm not used to that!). I just wish it had more storage capacity. But after the nightmare (after a decent amount of credits are being issued to my account) everything is going smoothly.

:eurekaBUT THEY DO NEED TO ADD MORE CHANNELS MORE FREQUENTLY!!:eureka

Just wanted to let you know that you can add more hard drive space to your Moxi by using a USB 2.0 external hard drive. I've added an extra 500GB to mine and now I never run out of space.

Just wanted to let you know that you can add more hard drive space to your Moxi by using a USB 2.0 external hard drive. I've added an extra 500GB to mine and now I never run out of space.

Well, I went out and bought a 360GB hard drive and hooked it up to my Moxi and it recognized it and everything was fine. Free space went from 70% full to only 8% full! I was so excited that I wouldn't have to worry about space anymore. BUT, after an hour or so, the Moxi would not record of off the second tuner. I could only record something if I watched it at the same time. When I scheduled a recording or a manual recording on the second tuner, it would fail. It would say in the "Canceled and Deleted" section "Failed (no signal)". It would say that time after time again. Frustrated, I called Charter and they sent someone out to swap the box because they said that the signal is fine. So the swapped the box. Once again about one hour later, SAME PROBLEM! I called again very frustrated and they sent someone out the next day to figure out the problem. They ended up adding new cables around the exterior of the house because the existing cables were painted over and the last time this house was painted was at least 20 years ago. So they replaced the cables and the signal jumped by 13 points! So I thought that there would be no problem now. It seemed to work at first (as usual) but again SAME PROBLEM!!! Now they blamed the problem on the external hard drive. They told me that the EHD is not supported right now. I told them that the option is there in the menu and the Moxi recognizes it when I plug it in. It even writes to it. It just won't on the second tuner. But they told me that Charter has that feature disabled in this area. WHAT???

I told them that 80GB is NOT enough space for me. I came from DirecTV and DISH before that and had a 120GB DVR and even that was almost too little space for me. So how would 80GB work for me? I told them that it would not. It told them that they need to give a DVR with a bigger hard drive or I will go back to satellite!!!

They were back out to my house two hours later (7:30 pm) with a brand new (tape still over it) and different model DVR. The tech told me that since I have had nothing but trouble since signing up and because I subscribe to every channel offered by Charter (in my area at least) that Charter jumped through hoops to get me this box that technically is not available to this area yet. I asked how big the hard drive is, and he told me 160GB! Now that WILL work for me! It is a Motorola DCH6416. It's a nice sleek looking box. When it got hooked up, I was ABSOLUTELY SHOCKED at the EXCELLENT QUALITY of the analog channels. With this box there is NO DIFFERENCE in quality between the analog and the digital! All channels are crisp, clean, damn near DVD quality! I could not believe my eyes. I have never seen analog channels look this good before. My son has a standard box and the analog channels look like crap on it. But this is night and day.

So it's been two days and I am very satisfied. This box has got to be the best DVR I've used yet (just for the excellent PQ alone). I always thought that the PQ would be the same no matter what the box. Guess not. A friend came over (who lives down the street and who has a Moxi) and couldn't believe his eyes. Now he doesn't like his Moxi anymore. He called Charter and asked for this box and they told him that it is not available in this area yet. (Cool:D)

Anyway, if the Motorola DCH6416 is available in your area, I absolutely recommend it!

Just our out of curiosity, there are a lot of negative posts on this site from people who don't like Charter. Is there anything positive about Charter that anyone can tell me about? Is there anything I can look forward too? Also, they tell me that I will get a Motorola DVR. Does anyone have one of these? Is it reliable?

I had been with Charter Cable for a long time. They have provided excellent service. The reason I switched to Dish TV is I wasn't happy with their DVR. They first started out with the MOXI and still have them in service. But they are getting old and breaking down and Charter is not getting any new ones in for now at least. So they started using the Motorola 3416. They are not near as neat as the MOXI and the Iguide setup in them doesn't work right half the time. So just switched couple of weeks ago and trying out satellite for the first time. So far really happy with Dish TV. The VIP722 HD DVR is super. There is a chance that Charter might be getting in new MOXIs. Might just switch back to them someday. I still have their very basic (channel 2-28) service and their Broadband service.

When I was with Dish, I had the 625 DVR and it was a very reliable DVR except for the occasional audio drop-outs. The 6416 that I have now is also very nice and is on par if not better than the 625. My only complaint so far would be that the PIP function has not been activated yet. And the 6416 is very quick in response to the remote which is a must for me.

The 722 is much better than the 625. I have one 625 and 3 722s. If you switch to Charter, if it was me, try to get a MOXI DVR. A lot of customers in my area had switched over to the 3416 and were dis-appointed. Lotsa folks tried to get the MOXIs back. The latest upgrade in the MOXI activated the external usb external storage. That made it much better to store more data especially since HD takes bunches of space.

Wow MLBurks, I had not read this thread all the way thru. Sorry about all your MOXI problems and glad you like your 6416.

Yes I have had a bit of a rollercoaster ride with Charter. But they worked hard to solve my problem. Even though it took three weeks with multiple trips to my house, it is now solved. The Moxi would be great if it had a bigger hard drive. And I would be happy with it if the external HD was supported. I don't understand if the option is there, why isn't it being used? Anyway, I am happy with my 6416. I like that I can change the colors of the GUI. And the search functions ROCK! Now all Charter has to do to make me 100% satisfied is to add Chiller to the channel line-up. I checked and DirecTV does NOT have exclusively rights to it and NBC Universal is looking for more carriers. Hear that Charter???

Well, I am glad it is all worked out for you. Here in the St Louis area the MOXI usb external storage is active. Before I turned in all our Charter DVRs I had a 500g hooked up to the MOXI and it worked great. I liked the way the MOXI 30 second skip button could be changed. I had mine set to 3 minute skip. It just about nailed the commercial skip with one push of the button most of the time. The MOXI is really sweet if it just wouldn't break down so much. I went to the new retail MOXI tour in St Louis last month. It is really going to be nice. Should be out by the end of the year or beginning of next year. I think it will be much better than the TIVO3. http://moxi.com/

Here's hoping that they will bring at least Fox Business Channel to us in the Mckenzie TN area.

We are still waiting for VOD here. I asked one of the many tech guys that visited my house recently about it and he said it is coming maybe by the end of the year or early next year.

Ok, I will let you in on a little secret about Charter and their digital cable and the HD offerings. Charter uses a services known as HITS, you can find the site at HITS Quantum - This company called HITS is a service that provides the channels to cable companies like Charter. This company is a cheaper/easier alternative to provide digital channels to cable companies. This company is setup to provide cable companies with more channels/poor quality/cheaper costs --- Charter utilizes this company and the HITS company just added some HD content to their lineup therefore Charter can now start offering these channels. Even though these channels are available on other providers, Charter can not add them until HITS beams them up into the sky. Once again this HITS company just provides certain channels to cable companies for less than the actual Network would allow Charter to receive it for...so when HITS adds new channels, Charter will too. HITS just put up a HD lineup with a few services on it. HITS is designed to save cable companies large chunks of money...but you don't see Charter lowering their service prices...

Thanks for the info. That was very interesting. I notice that Hits has the channels that I would like to have in their lineup (Chiller, Sleuth, Fox Reality). Is there any reason why Charter hasn't added those yet. I am snail mailing them a letter this week about letting them know that I want those channels.

Interesting info....I guess they get the other HD channels on the system from other satellites or other companies such as HITS. Hopefully, given this, they'll add NGC HD, HGTV HD and Food Network HD within the next few months.

BLAH! I wish Charter could add channels I get allot more channels OTA added and had the same HD channels for who knows how long. Here is the list of channels I get in my Location:

Finaly more channels are being added ESPN 2 HD, Starz HD, A&E HD, Cinemax HD, Discovery Famalia, CSTV and alot of channels moving to Digital what I do not get is when they saying moving to digital does that mean I will no longer have it without the cable box? It is going to be very intresting year when it is 2009, especially for Cable companies not really for satelite since they are moving forward like Direct TV Jesus how many HD channels they keep on adding, they must have serious bandwith.
