New remote, fresh batteries, no connection

IR or uhf? Could be the tv interfering with IR which could be resolved using a uhf remote.

If you've got the uhf remote that came with it set it up & I'll bet you won't have anymore problems with a non responsive remote.

it is paired. Using remote 1 on a 722K. Sometimes it connects - most of the time not

What brand of TV? Flat screen? Does the TV have a feature known as "backlighting"? Experience has shown that large flat screen TVs with backlighting can cause some pretty severe IR interference with the #1 IR remote. As others have said, if you have a remote that is IR/UHF, you can change the switch back where the batteries are to UHF, press "System Info" on the receiver, then press SAT then RECORD, and it will re-address remote #1, and will make it UHF. That will often cure issues with remote #1 and IR interference.
