Starting July 11th Plan A customers will be able to upgrade to the Hopper with Sling for FREE! There will still be a technician visit fee but the Upgrade fee did drop $100. The regular Hopper is still free for Plan A customers but the the fee dropped to $50 for Plan B customers. This is great news for those of you wanted to upgrade to the new Hopper system.

I'm sure many will ask how you find out what plan you are or how you become a Plan A customer. There really is no way for any of us to find out, Dish uses a certain type of formula. One of the most important things is to have your account in good standing. Make sure you have not missed any payments and that you have not upgraded recently.

I guess I am neither Plan A or Plan B, but my account is in good standing, but only customer for about 8 months--quote $200 to upgrade, so just wonder?

I'm assuming it's because you haven't even been a customer 1 year. Dish is still giving you the promo credits. May want to wait until you at least hit 12 months.

OK - I understand the extra goodies like built in WiFi and faster processor, but I don't really understand what I will gain with the "sling" feature. Does it give you a mirror of your Hopper online or does it offer like an additional channel on line? Any help will be appreciated.

The Sling allows you to watch live TV or recordings from our DISH Anywhere website, or via the DISH Anywhere app you can download to a mobile device. It lets you essentially take your TV anywhere there is an internet connection. It will still use an active tuner on the receiver though.

Thanks for the quick response - I'll check this out and most likely want to do the upgrade if I stay grandfathered in my old rate structure.

I just gave the go ahead to order my Hopper with Sling for a self install. Great deal since no cost to get a better unit just a new two year contract which does not matter to me since I have been a customer since '99 or so.

My question would be why Dish would be offering to basically recall the original Hoppers that appear to be working just fine? I have been totally satisfied and impressed with my Hopper and one Joey setup for a little over 14 months now so what is Dish's thinking?

I'm assuming they will phase out the original Hopper and make the Hopper with Sling their flagship model. There is just more confusion when there are two Hopper models.

Lot of capital involved in the original Hopper. Hard to see them phasing it out, especially when you consider the older models they are still squeezing money out of.

Dang HWS already shipped that was quick. :) Yeah I'm thinking about getting a EHD but would like to use the Slim Seagate that just run on USB power and take up less room.

As noted in earlier replies, using an unpowered EHD is not advisable. But you can plug it into a powered USB hub and that will work just fine.

Yep. Just like every other material item in the world. It goes something like this.
Today: look what we did!
A year from today: look how much better this sh*t is in the same size box.

I'm hopping on this deal with the help of Stephen H in DIRT with an assist from Mary B. Upgrading both my Hoppers to HWS for free. They are mailing me the HWS in boxes and I mail the old Hoppers back. Stephen H said the computer shows my grandfathered fees staying the same. Hope that is true. We shall see I suppose. A few stories out there about fees going up have me nervous.

OK
Well got my HWS in everything works fine just waiting on the Icons to show up in the guide but besides that Apps work and Sling works very well. Tried the Dish Anywhere App on my One and it works very well so overall I really like the HWS. Again Thanks to the DIRT Team for all of your help. :)

Once again I'm not a good enough customer for the free upgrade. $200 bucks is a bit much when so many are getting to upgrade for free.
