NHL 2012 off-season notes & transactions

That really stinks. I was looking forward to the game after Thanksgiving and the Winter Classic. Im not a big hockey fan as I think this is my first post in this thread but lets say that they end the lockout tonight, tomorrow or Sunday. How early can they prepare and get the games going? Even if its settled by Monday, lets say, they wouldnt be able to start the games by Thanksgiving? Im not trying to knock hockey or hockey fans but I really dont know this question which is how long would it take for the players to have training camp, practice etc.?

They had said that if a deal was done by October 25 they would have started the Season on November 2nd. The problem is that they most likely won't even try to get a deal done before the end of November now.

most players are doing something right now....alot of MN Wild/MN born players have been practicing at local high school rinks. Players are in "minor leagues". I know the Alaska Aces (ECHL) are running a commercial with "welcome our 3 newest players...courtesy of the NHL". Back in 04-05 (the last lockout) Scotty Gomez went back and played for Alaska that year

Bottom line is if they said Monday "agreement signed.....you get a week for practice then games start games" most guys would be ready to go

Sounds like it :) They should be in Room talking until they get this resolved :)

I would imagine all the players that are playing in Europe can walk out of thier contract with them when needed ?

If they, this same cycle will repeat every 6-7 years with Bettman in charge. The 'stars' need to spend the year playing in Europe and show the NHL they mean business. Can you imagine how many empty seats there would be in Washington if Ovechkin played the season overseas? The same does with many of the top European and Russians stars. We shall see.

ESPN is blocked at work here. What does it say in a nutshell?

Although there was limited communication between NHL Players' Association special counsel Steve Fehr and NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly over the weekend, the stalemate between the sides continues, making it likely that the Winter Classic will be canceled.

Daly said Monday that the two sides had no plans to meet but that the league is ready and willing to meet as soon as necessary.

"No new news. We withdrew our most recent proposal on Friday, and now we are spending time thinking about our next proposal and how best to get closer to a resolution," Daly said by email. "We hope the union is doing the same thing. Given the fact that the union refused even to discuss our last proposal, it would appear that we still have a large gulf to bridge."

The league and union have not resumed negotiations since swapping proposals in Toronto almost two weeks ago, and it seems clear that the impasse is not close to ending.

Fehr denied that the union is not willing to play ball.

"Since the last bargaining meeting on Oct. 18, we have consistently made it clear to the League that we are ready to meet and are willing to discuss all ideas, certainly including their last proposal," he told ESPN.com. "The league has unfortunately continued to decline to meet. Their position makes it difficult to move the process forward, as it is obviously hard to make progress without talking."

Since rejecting the union's trio of proposals, the league has made two rounds of game cancellations. The latest, announced on Friday, wiped out the regular-season schedule for November. A source familiar with the league's plan told ESPNNewYork.com that the league is expected to cancel the Winter Classic on Thursday, the source said.

Even if tensions between the two sides thaw, Mother Nature would make it tough for the sides to resume negotiations in New York this week because of the effects of Hurricane Sandy. The storm is moving in to the city later Monday; mass transit and schools have been suspended, and the city has ordered hundreds of thousands to evacuate.

NHLPA executive director Don Fehr is back in Toronto, the union's nerve center. Fehr had plans to fly to Minnesota to meet with players on Monday.

Really no point in having a season now. They have already lost 1/4 of the season and it would be tough to have a fair schedule for all of the conferences now.

uh oh.....Grapes thinks no season

Coach's Corner star Don Cherry gave a less-than-optimistic take on how long the NHL lockout will last while joining CBC's Metro Morning radio show on Thursday.

Cherry, who was also on to mark the 60th anniversary of Hockey Night in Canada, believes the NHL will endure another lost season.

“If I’m betting, I’d say no [NHL season],” Cherry told host Matt Galloway.

After cancelling the Winter Classic on New Years we will not have Hockey this year imo :) Donald Fehr is the worse thing to happen to Hockey :)

I am not to sure that it is the Players or Fehr that is the problem. I have a strong feeling that it is Bettman is behind the stoppage in the league. Kind of funny that there are some owners that don't want to honor contracts that were just signed over the summer.
