A friend of mine has 4 311's on his account.
He got the new smart cards.
However he got only 2 cards, the other 2 had a text "this receiver does not need smart card update" so I guess he will be okay with 2. He got all 4 receivers at the same time about 18 months ago or so.

Does somebody know what and why not all the 311's and older receivers might not need smart card update ?

The new smartcards are built into some receivers. Your friend might have received two new receivers and two new, but older built receivers.

Please re-read or just read main thread with a name "SMART CARD".

There is posted a method what will tell with 100% accuracy if you need or not the fa^%$^&%g card !!!

Don't pay any attention to Smith, P He is the local cynic, but most of the time very helpful. . Welcome to Sat guys US, Most of us are a little friendlier.

No one needs to bother posting on the board anymore...the new procedure is to just email or PM your question/comment/inquiry to Smith, P, and he will happily direct you to the correct post where he has already answered your question or commented on your subject! :p

:D

Would you recommend use Search for newbies here ?

I agree. I am currently in the process of getting venture capital to fund a startup that will use the awesome power of vbulletin search to dethrone Google. We all know the impeccable drill down accuracy that it provides...

In other news, I did a quick search for fun to figure out which thread specifically you were referring to and could not find it being there are about 100 of them, mostly rambling commentaries without the specific information the poster requested. I am sure if I committed a little more time to the task (being familiar with this specific search implementation) I could find it.

Running a form myself, a general rule that I impress upon the moderators and long time members is posting a link to the thread that best answers the question for a new poster while at the same time linking to the faq the describes the search function of the site and explaining that it is possible to explore the site's rich content on ones own accord.

Carrot and stick.

thank you bacchus101, I did not find the specific answer to my question, I felt like I was ignorant or something, with all due respect I am a software engineer and do some pretty complex applications, I do not understand why a simple search that should be so easy did not give me an answer to my specific question. Should I write a binary tree search ?

If someone has the link to the specific question it would be greatly appreciated, ir if somebody knows the answer.

Best regards to you all

Your question is to specific to be found in any of the previous threads. I agree with bacchus101 in saying that the previous threads about smart cards were mainly rambling.

I would have you or your friend call dish or chat with a CSR at Chat Assistance

You want to make sure that you only need 2 smart cards. If you don't put smart cards in the receivers that turn out to need them you will loose the programing on those receivers once Dish changes the encryption system.

Best of luck,

Hard to imaging all those ppl who incline to gather knowledge here did read relevant threads after use Search for keywords "smart card" and didn't notice pertinents posts what describe practical answer to posed question.
Perhaps logic wasn't clear from beginning ?
Could be it - what status of my receiver should be ? Would be status of the receiver adequate to current Dish requirement ? What Dish going to achieve by the process of swapping smart cards ?
Then those many answers "check DNASP" [version] would be exactly point of check to get response to 100s similar threads scattered here during last mounts.

Your b****ing is getting real old. He asked a question and we are doing our best to answer it. This site is meant for you to ASK QUESTIONS! It is not meant to insult someone's intelligence. If he wanted to search through loads of information he could of used google! Yes, he could check his DNASP number but it is unlikely that an 18 month old 311 has the new smart card built in!

thank you ab187

that is my point
how is it possible that an 18 month old receiver has dnasp 241 already ?

I understand receivers with dnasp 241 are okay to go
I understand newer receivers like the vip series have it built in

how is posible that a 18+ month old 311 receiver have that built in already ?

so I was wondering if there is a reason for this.
