OFFICIAL DISH / FOX ORDEAL DISCUSSION THREAD

My parents have Dish and when our Local Fox goes so might he. We live south of Minneapolis too far to get OTA. I have Directv and have encourage him to go that route. As a former Dish subsriber they have way too many pulled channels over disputes. I had them during the Nick and MTV fiasco. At that time I also lost my CBS station.

I do understand Charlies position but something needs to be worked out before they get to these types of things.

I must say that while I really like Dish Network, this is getting ridiculous. We've been customers for less than a year and this is the second time that channels have gone bye-bye. If we lose local Fox channels, I'll be pretty disappointed, and if Fox Soccer Channel disappears, I feel sorry for the person at Dish who gets an ear full from my wife.

There was a quote somewhere from a bigwig at Local TV LLC that stated they've given Fox their proxy for the negotiations.Sure. And they aren't owned by Fox or any of NewsCorp's subsidiaries, any longer. DirecTV is now an independant company. You've missed quite a few transactions over the past couple of years if you believe Fox has anything to do with it.[/QUO

I never suggested that Fox still owned DirecTV?.

Though it maybe interesting to find out who is in The DirecTV Group that now owns and controls DirecTV.;)

its not extortion its business. fox has a product and has set a price on it
dish does not want to buy it for that. if enough people wont buy it then fox will change the pricing

Exactly. And if other services like TWC and CV and D* manage to settle with Fox while Dish doesn't then Charlie will need to change his stance or lose a large number of subscribers.

if dish took all the money they are giving people who complain, maybe they could afford to settle with fox and not raise prices
all these freebies are gonna cost in the long run

Do a shareholder lookup.

What I can state off the top of my head:

Fox took their 34 percent or so of voting stock and swapped it for Liberty Media's 17 percent stake in NewsCorp. Liberty then was forced to divest itself of voting rights early this year, so DirecTV took that stock, the Class B stock which had 15 votes per share, and exchanged it for a larger amount of Class A stock which only had 1 vote per share, like the rest of DirecTV's stock. That only left Liberty Media with about 3 percent voting rights.

The rest of the large shareholders are more than likely institutional investors.

I'd love to have the stations back but, I do not want my bill to go up. The reason I have a hard time siding with Dish is I get tired of hearing the line "we are trying to keep cost down for our customers." If that was true then they would not raise our fees almost every February, and like they did a few months ago. Dish wants to raise prices, all companies do, they always want more money. If they could get away with it, they would raise prices every month so all the bs about not wanting to raise prices gets on my last nerve. If Dish really cared about the customer, they would lower their prices during this dispute since they are not having to pay Fox right now. If the Disney and Fox channel never come back, will the Dish lower our rates, I mean they aren't having to pay as much so why should we? That's why all this talk from Charlie is complete bs; just get the deal done and bring the channels back because, we all know you are going to raise our rates in February no matter what happens with Fox and Disney.

I'm more upset right now because there are still HD stations that Dish has not added (ESPNU and MLB come to mind) yet we are now losing more channels with nothing new coming in sight.

Charley better.....

IF I lose my local Fox affiliate, My "10 year love affair" with Dish is OVER! I am already pissed about my local RSN channel and any HD channels I have "sacrificed" with no adjustment in my monthly bill.

Honestly, I say increase the monthly charge and lets get our Channel's back ASAP.

I do have OTA BUT that is beside the point. Dish is asking a lot out of it's Consumer's and Honestly, I am getting tired of it bigtime.

Charley, Saddle up your dang Horse and give us our HD Channels back or adjust our monthly billing. THIS SUCKS!

Verizon has been begging me to upgrade my Double play of Fios Phone and Internet to TV as well for about $10 a month extra..... If Fox goes away, this is the route I'm going..... Hate their boxes, but I watch too much FOX to risk losing it for long (I used to believe that these ploys would cause the programmers to cave in about a week, but ESPNNews HD has been gone for months, and FOX looks ready to play hardball for the long haul).

There is not a single thing you stated that is true, except for a national WB

Oh really.. DodgeKing, I was with D* from 1996 to 2000 .. Plus they still send me letters to come back but I just put them through the shredder. Besides I own my equipment from E* and have no 2-year contracts. Which I can go further, I used to be a technician for D* in Austin, Tx. I can say their slimline is a pain to get setup. Cause if you are off just a little on the alignment. You will not pick up there two HD programming sats. Which the 1000.4 is a much better design and easier to pick up 61.5, 72.7, and 77 sats. I can go on.. I have the birdog ultra sat meter with both D*, E*, Wildblue, Hughesnet, and Starband programmed in it. Which the technicians in Austin, Tx. for D* use on their job sites.

Ok but its sort of naive to think that your rates are going to stay the same over the entire time you signed up for dontcha think? If it bothers you then switch, but I guarantee you that no matter who you sign with, rates are going to climb over a multi year deal. The first part of your post kinda says it all.

If your Fox affiliate is Fox OWNED and OPERATED. Assuming you are in the Shreveport DMA, it is not, and won't be affected.

That explains it. The WB removed itself from WGN America around then. And local channels weren't really available until December 1999, so you probably had your distant feeds pulled, as DirecTV never pulled the local channels from anyone in Texas, ever.

That kind of thinking is why people now pay north of $100 for tv service and why we'll never see ala carte. Just give the programmers whatever they want.

My local FOX station would be lost Nov. 1 but I can get it OTA....so thats not really a problem for me but for those that cant get OTA that would be a reason to jump ship for sure.

I am ticked about not being able to see my RSN though as the Wild play their first hockey home game tonight.

I am not taking sides on whose right or wrong but the consumer is paying the price right now.

PS..... giving me 3 ppv coupons does NOT make me a happy camper either
