Can channels instead of having an SD and HD Version of their channels so this.......

Have one channel, send it out in HD if source material is in hd and upconvert the rest of shows to HD.. but not the artificial stretching,

and then at the distributors end (DIRECTV) or customers end (RECIEVER) that based on input it goes into tv.....

it is the converted into signal tv can use

in otherwords, instead of needing hd and sd versions of channels

it be sent out all in HD (once the digital coversion in 2009 is steam rolling) and the set top box, or built in tv tuner via the cables we input into the tv, converts it to signal we can use

If you mean dynamic selection of stream resolution based on hardware ability (stream ONLY what that receiver supports (or which output is being used) and nothing else), that would require two-way communications (expensive equipment) and a complete redesign of the hardware and software on both ends, and maybe new satellites.

Satellite sends everything to all receivers, the receiver selects one supported stream at a time (Active Mix channels excepted, those use multiple streams) from every stream sent, the satellite has no way of knowing which receiver is using what because it is one-way communication (not including internet satellite).

If that is not what you meant, please clarify.

I think what he is suggesting is simply push the HD feed and leave it up to the receiver to decode as HD or downconvert to SD as necessary. Seems simple enough to combine streams or eliminate the clutter.
